The mystery of the Rupay Card sent by HDFC Bank has been solved (hopefully). When I tried to change pin today I got an error 'AUTH ID DEACTIVATED'. When I went to the branch I was told it's a card for the account where I am a joint holder nowhere does it say so, not in the sms or email or even in the covering letter which came with the card. Wonder what type of people they are employing. Except for arrogance and cockiness nothing much else. I am not sure if this is true or BS given by the branch just to get rid of me. They tried to tell me I was too slow in typing hence the error. I debunked that v quickly. Will post on Twitter & let's see what they say. I have to now wait for another sms with another otp. Hopefully that will work.

The card is for the holder on whose name it has been issued. It bears no connection if the account is jointly held or not. Even for business accounts, there will be no indication because, the card is provided on the basis of mode of operation or declaration.
Bank is no where at fault in this.

You can log in to your netbanking to verify if the card number is attached to your primary account or not.

I know it's for the holder in whose name it is but my gripe is when I already have a chip card which is valid till 2023 why send another one. And you may not be aware that we had in the 1990's had been given cards with such an arrangement as the Bank is telling me now.
Two cards to ever holder one for my account & one for the account where I am joint holder. These were plain ATM cards (pre debit card era) later these were dumped for ATM cum debit cards after that when RBI made it compulsory to have a chip, these were issued, which is what I currently have.

The bank has confirmed that this new ATM card is NOT for my account but for the account where I am a joint holder. They realized that they should have mentioned it clearly in their communications with me. In the past you could not change your debit card pin for the first time via netbanking but now the site is silent on this but take a look at the new rules they have now.

a) Please note that, as security measures the instant pin generation facility are not extended to the senior citizens, however you can choose to continue to avail these services after turning 70 years old by giving prior consent.To give prior consent, please Click here
b) You can use this PIN (Personal Identification Number) at Point of Sale transactions at Merchant outlets, e-Commerce transactions and ATMs.
c) Instant Pin Generation is free for You. For security reasons please do not share your PIN with anyone.
d) You can change the PIN at any point of time at ATM/NetBanking.
:unsure::poop:
Senior citizens have to go gallivanting all over town to change their PIN but cannot be allowed to do it from home. Needless to say family members are not amused.

Maybe. Been a customers from 1998 & it was not allowed then. Never used it all these years as this job was always synchronized with my visits to the bank. & even the johnny at the bank told me the same crap day before yesterday.

Johny in the bank might be a newbie :D

You can receive conflicting answers from the guys sitting behind the desk in all the banks :P

:D Actually no. I have seen him at the same place for last 3 years. Supposed to be in charge of all RM's. About getting different answers from people at the counter is true for all banks as most of them are not even conversant with their own systems. I guess they all work on the need to know basis;). Thats why I sent a DM on twitter & got things cleared up but I still have to wait for their OTP via SMS

A bit off topic: I am unable to set a ATM pin for my debit card even after i have access to net banking. seems like going to hdfc atm is the only way to set it first time after opening new account , is that correct ?

As a merchant I welcome Rupay cards as transaction charges are fraction of what Visa extorts. But as a spender, I would have to restrict myself to Singapore, Bhutan, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Myanmar, Australia and South Korea only as these are the only countries accepting RuPay. :LOL:
