Putin views Ukraine and it's bordering countries as Russia's backyard. Any turmoil in those countries, such as democratic reforms, freedom of speech and criticism, is an indirect threat to Putin and his hegemony.

It's the same as how USA considers South and Central America as its own backyard.

What I found funny is how quickly Indian media spread the news about troops backing off and continued doing it while international media was silent.
