Reinstalled it with MPlayer. OSD still not working. Subs work. I wonder what am I missing.

I am not sure how it works in Windows. But in Linux you dont need any GUI.

You just need to learn few keyboard shortcuts.. and then seeking / volume changing etc becomes so easy.

I use mouse scroll for volume. And arrow keys for seeking. I prefer SMPlayer because it has an internal subtitle downloader which works extremely well. And there are very useful keyboard shortcuts for resizing the player window, adding/removing lag in subtitle/audio and so on. This is why I never could get used to VLC.

Getting the key is not the point. It did not work earlier because HDD had changed. Not sure if they will be giving a new key :p

There is a desktop PC in my office of 2008 vintage that has Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and Intel motherboard in it. Win 8 was installed on it at the time of launch as upgrade from Win 7.

Apparently Windows 8.1 can't be installed on certain Intel motherboards with Intel core 2 duo CPU. So that machine is lying in a corner in my office and is rarely used.

Looks like the OP also has a motherboard and CPU combo on which Win 8 to 8.1 upgrade can't be done.

And.. I might as well get a clean Win 8 ISO & install ..as I do have the key for that.

Sidenote: Download of Win 8.1 ISO on a USB is in progress..

I dont think that is the issue. Some Win 8 patches are failing to install - Due to which Win 8.1 update via store option never appears.

And its a Core i3..

I am not sure if OEM Windows license gets affected by change of HDD or not. It was not replaced by Dell. They got through someone locally & had it replaced.

If they are going to give the same license that was given earlier - it wiont work, atleast it did not.
