My 500GB internal hard drives are nearing the limit. I need to buy an hard disk to store my important documents and photos, videos etc., Please suggest me a good reliable brand (with good warranty if possible). Also, tell me which is better SSDs or HDs? I want it to be reliable. No to Online Storage, since i'm using Airtel!

ssd? slc or mlc?
hybrid? platter@5400/7200/10000
hdd? platter@5400
scsi? this is the right choice baby ahaa!
question just scsi wont help, just ide wont help, just sata wont help, internal wont help external wont help. you need to RTFM yourself than buy talks from us. each here got his/her own views about a product which is right from that person's point of view and or experience. money is yours choice is yours, do some reading and research and educate yourself.
viz. a friend of mine goes to market and buys off an external hdd, 1 tb seagate branded samsung, when having being told his hdd is failing smart error, now he goes for a 1 tb molded casing instead of an internal 2.5" and in a months time it fails. now he is in miserable state because he cant use his Sony vaio laptop internal hdd failed and he cant uncase the 2.5" internal which is stuffed in a pink plastic case, because he will void his warranty. haha sad sad.
:-D get the idea? both the drives are samsung. the thing is you need to think for yourself, and spend judiciously, before you take others expert opinion? do a little bit research yourself. think before you act, else you are in deep deep trouble.

Bart is the man. Old seasons were the best. Recent episodes are mostly sarcasm and exaggeration of character traits.
Anyway, my question stays unanswered . External hdds, seagate wd etc ; how do they fear after power cuts while transferring data?
I also read that the new ones, even the wd my essentials external hdd, if it falls once it can be and many times is, fatal.
If anyone has been using one of these hdds, please share your experience wrt my query.
Thanks

can i counter question you?
*all the questions i am asking are important else i would not waste your time, my time, forum's time, internet users time, internet bandwidth, humanity's time, most likely to me it looks like you wish to save all documents, and photos and videos (esply p0rn, dear prescious)!*
i will assume yes then they will be:
#1. what is your budget? maxima and minima...
#2. what is your mode of transfer? usb, e-sata, mini-pcie, pcie, serial (YES SERIAL DATA TRANSFER)
#3. if usb which generation usb 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0
#4. planning to go for a hard drive ATA/PATA and/or SATA and/or SCSI (scuzee) and/or SSD (MLC OR SLC)
#5. have you got RAID in your machine laptop/desktop, hardware raid.
#6. do you plan to use software RAID, which mode or w/o raid.
#7. if ssd then is it SLC (single layer cell) or MLC (multi layer cell)?
#8. scsi? you got a scsi card? else forget scsi its alien technology and cards esply usb are shit ass expensive.
#9. you want to go for a native hard drive and attach casing later?
now probable answers from you may be like this, else correct me where i am wrong.
#1. i dont know depends on how much you wish to spend.
#2 & #3. usb is the most widely used, with usb 1.0/1.1 data transfer rate is 12 Mbps, which means 12,000/1024 MBps (do the math yourself), with usb 2.0 its 280 mbps i.e. (480*1000)/1024 MBps rouchly 35 MBps, with usb 3.0 its 5 gbps theoritically practically 4 gbps i.e. [4*1000000]/1024 MBps. 3.2 Gbps or ~400 MBps, sata see e-sata, attach an e-sata apaptor. mini-pcie to sata/IDE/PATA adaptor, sata fast 1.5-3.2 Gbps, PATA no idea, you will be more insane than i am if you try it. serial, hmmm, ignore it. because its way too complicated. beyond a single post its will be then a mini-howto.
#4 & #7. SCSI is expensive highly expensive piece of wonder, insanely fast, as fast as SSD or faster 10000 RPM drives. i would never recommend someone scsi unless they know whats WTF! SSD are of 2 types SLC or MLC, SLC is NAND and MLC is NOR based. SLC will be faster but wear and tear is more, you know how to scrub SSDs. if no then dont go for MLC, go for SLC. SLC's cost more, but requires less scrubbing, dont scrub too much and too often your hdd will go for a toss.
#5 & #6. RAID (Redundant array of independent/inexpensive disks), if you dont know you will never use it. its used to duplicate hard drives and de-duplicate and re-duplicate hard drive data, if you dont know RIAD you will never need RAID0,1,2,3,4,5,6,10. if you dont know raid you will never need these.
#9. native sata 500 GB or 1 TB hdd, w/o casing or enclosure, sata hybrid i.e. about 200 US$ 2nd hand roughly, SSD 1 TB? 5000 US$ (are you still conscious or have you fainted? ;-))
option 9 is ideal for me, you will have best of both the world. Get any seagate/samsung/wd etc etc manufacturer 500 G or 1T, get an e-sata 2.5" or 3.5" adapter/enclosure, can be 2.5" or 3.5" in size and plug and play, you will have the speed of esata which is rouchly 400+ MBps
i.e. to transfer one 4.4 Gig torrent dvd dump will happen in 4482/400 =11.2 ~12 -13 seconds max. with USB you need to wait for a minute or less.
did i solve your issue?
hope this helps!
yes too much info was necessary since one mistake means excess expense and mental trauma and frustration and also save you a broad spectrum antifungal cream so you dont scratch your head in the shop! now you got the idea? happy shopping.

Indeed it is helpful. I hate it when i need to use too much anti fungal cream, it's the worst.
took more than 2 reads and several google hits to understand and give up trying to understand some parts though :p thanks for typing it all out.
Current laptop is usb 2.0, but next upgrade should be usb 3.0 . I think i'l go for a 7200rpm or more 'native sata' or 'hybrid sata', whichever fits into my budget. (under Rs.8000) and a casing.
If it runs on my TV's usb i/p it'l be icing on the cake, otherwise i'l just use my 500g portable for that. I am just a bit skeptical about the durability of the drive though, i dont want to get an expensive super fast 9000rpm hdd which dies after one 3feet drop! And/or looses data if the light goes while transferring etc. I will see also if this native drive will fit into my ps3 if i need to expand it's hdd. I think it uses SATA. Time to google more random things to lose hdd noob status

3.5 external hdd is always risky as it requires external adapter to power up and use. What if the power goes when you are using it ( especially between a transfer). Boom! atleast you lose that work & re-do it when the power comes back.
With the recent hdds quality. The power failure may make the hdd unusable. The probability is more ...
So get the 2.5 (portable). Atleast the data won't be compromised if you have an UPS or using with lappy. Look for 7200 rpm atleast. Segate expansion drives has been good for me over the yrs. Though it's little bigger in size than the other portable drives. The sturdy outer casing protected my hdds from the accidental drops ...

Over the past year or two, my friends and I have purchased about 8 of these. Runs perfectly, fast with USB 3 laptops and reliable so far. I have a nice case to protect this from falls and no issues so far. These are available in India as well. I have 2, one powering my WII (about 4 years old - non usb 3) and another for moving content to NAS or movies etc.

the only 2.5" 2tb under 10k is wd passport, and its slow. at least on usb 2.0 . 5400 rpm.. :( i've transferred data on the same model, 1tb and its slower than my 500gb transcend usb2.0 portable..well looks like it's my only choice though.
thanks for all the inputs

just had a check with local store...
WD slim, wd ultra and wd elements. How are they different? Which is better?
Seagate was the cheapest there. but dont know how reliable they are. Sony and others were also there.

and what about the reliability? My Passport is more reliable than every other i guess.
What i'm hearing these days is Seagate is also reliable.
