My 500GB internal hard drives are nearing the limit. I need to buy an hard disk to store my important documents and photos, videos etc., Please suggest me a good reliable brand (with good warranty if possible). Also, tell me which is better SSDs or HDs? I want it to be reliable. No to Online Storage, since i'm using Airtel!

External hard drives are more prone to failure. Prone to physical damage and dependency on usb ports for power.

After seeing lots of hard disk disasters at various places, like doctors, business, personal users, I certainly support online backup.

BUT, my lagging town doesn't has any good solution for Good Speed and affordable Bandwidth and I would hate to Pay Rs.200 for each family video to get uploaded, 3G is still expensive in India.

So all those have good connectivity should opt for online Backup, you won't know its worth until you face blunder on local backup.

For all those who favor local backup (yes, even I do it) you should at least have 2 copies and 1 of it at a place away from your home/work place, whats the use of having 2 copies of backup HDD/DVD/USB Stick at same location which might have threat of theft/fire/any catastrophe making both copies un-usable.

the basic thing we are trying to say is that have multiple backups. and do not rely on an external media for irreplaceable data.

okay, i just learned now that an external harddisk unplugged for an year or so will lose all its data inside it. So, not using the hard disk for long time not necessarily increase data life.

lol. who said so? anyways. there is another saying... turning off/on your computer decreases its life. running your computer 24x7 is actually healthier for your computer provided you have a good power supply and cooling setup. :) every off and on puts load on the various components decreasing their life. my personal advice would be to get a hard disk. and then prepare a long term online backup solution for the ultimate redundancy. even if you are on a fupped plan, you can easily plan to spare 5GB per month? you do not necessarily have to backup everything in one go right?

How about using another internal hard disk as secondary?

if u have space well enough for that u can by all means have that option

Internal drives are constantly spinning (even if green drives used to some extent), so their life I am guessing may not be as good as the external USB thingies that you use once in a week to backup.

but the reality is vice versa , internal drives failures are little less than external drives , it could be because of constant moving , shifting and shocks for the external drives

my laptop hard disk has survived for 5 years and still running , but had a exchange a 1 TB seagate within a year of purchase
but it all depends on luck i should say
i can back up data from two or more computers, so i dont want an internal hard disk. Moreover, internal hard disks have more risks of virus attack. BTW, it seems like 1TB is virtually enough for Photos and videos. But, don't know. Seagate seems to be quite cheaper compared to Western Digital. Which one to go? Again the point of importance is reliability, i'm okay with the speed.

seagate support is good , price is cheap , easily available , built quality is bad
WD support is kinda OK , u need to contact them they will pick the HDD from u and deliver the replacement one , price is little more , available in metros alone
built quality is very good .

if u want i can post the photos of seagate backup+ VS WD my passport .

okay, i just learned now that an external harddisk unplugged for an year or so will lose all its data inside it. So, not using the hard disk for long time not necessarily increase data life.

i had this doubt 3 years back and got it cleared after reading .
if u are not going to use it for a long time , just store it in a safe place , thats it

External hard drives are more or less like gambling , sometimes u win and sometimes u lose you cant find the reason for both :D

I was thinking of getting the WD 3.5" 2tb external HDD. I am already using a 2.5" transcend 500gb hdd, and as it is always connected to the laptop (no external power adaptor) , i am not worried about random disconnections in case of power failure / fluctuation.
Will i have a problem with the 3.5" external hdd if say i am transferring data and the power goes out? Will i lose data or corrupt the hdd if i interept it while it is transfering data? Or say if i am playing a movie via the external hdd on my tv and again, the light goes out?
Power cuts are frequent enough in our glorious country so if im going to buy this hdd i need to know if ^^ occurs more than once in a while.
Thanks

SSD is better for running the Operating System and other installed programs and because of its cost it is not a feasible option for data storage. You can use the old 500GB for storage and get a new SSD to run the OS
