Sources said the auction may start by the middle of August.

The Telecom Ministry had earlier recommended a reserve or minimum price of Rs 2020 crore which was not accepted by the Ministry of Finance who had asked the Telecom Ministry to double it.

The likely contenders for the 3G spectrum may include Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communication, Tatas and a few other new private telecom operators.

Similarly, on the lines of 3G the Government will also auction spectrum for wireless broadband services known as WiMax.

The Telecom Ministry had recommended pan-India reserve price of Rs 1,010 crore for wireless broadband services whereas Ministry of Finance had doubled it in this case too.

Its was, however, not immediately ascertained where this also figured in the discussions with the Prime Minister on Friday.

Sources, however, said there could be a consensus on this also.

So much? Is this one time or yearly? And such high price also means thats 3G wud be charged very high by operators too. And hence except rich people, noone else is going to opt for it and it will be total fiasco.

With such huge reserve, and the final price will be more than this after bidding. So there is no hope of affordable mobile broadband in the near-term. :frown:

government is evil. they should just charge a fixed price from all interested operators per year. that charge should be a percentage of revenues generated by the company. let all serious players enter the market after giving a bank guarantee that can be used if the company fails to deliver in the end. government has already shown their evil side by letting mtnl and bsnl launch their 3G services with so much buffer time.even with all the time in the world, both bsnl and mtnl have been sheer failures in the market. i bet if a company like virgin is given a chance they would launch exciting packages with exciting handsets...

Govt decision is very bad ,by doubling the price. well how airtel will takes it because on the other hand they are dealing in MTN ,what about idea which is yet to grow in new circles which is spending money on improving or erecting towers, then what about new company's like datacom unitech, :madness:redface::madness::madness::madness::madness:

I totally agree with this. MTNL and BSNL 3G services haven't been good at all though.

mobile broadband in INDIA will never be affordable .. and .. service wont ever be upto the Standards. With this high Reserve prices , Goverment is not thinking of the people and making things affordable but only in filling their own pockets:@:@:frown:
