3G roaming - it’s about voice silly - Bharat Kumar's Notes
every operator would tell you that they intend to use the spectrum available under '3G' grant for voice, not data,
even though the govt. said it was all for the good cause of the growth of internet here.
They also run data, to be fair, but at rates which remind you of pre-liberalization, of telecom if not India
so DoT seems to be upset that the operators sought and got the clarifications that it is okayy..(didn't think through what they were saying )
to roam for data intra-circle....indeed anything was fine as the bids were going up
the operators knew what they were asking too and what they got DoT to say
it was therefore quiet infuriating for large telcos, the honchos in particular, to see a DoT clarifying that 3G roaming isn't allowed intra-circle.
if that is allowed, I can jump from my poor network to a better network without bothering about porting the number.
also means an effective consolidation of operations (of remnant and newer smaller operators)
and dividing of territories and then squeeze the penny-pinching desi !
Which I think is the meaning of "what do tell the smaller operators?!!" if we allow this
