I just got a movie (Saajan) which is sold by Moser Baer. The DVD cost just rs. 39, but when I opened it, I found to my surprise that it was a DVD-9. There are seven 1 GB files in it. I didn't think it would be so cheap... But this is where the problem starts - after the 7th 1 GB file, there is a small 8th file (about 40 MB I think), and that is the last file in the movie, but the movie is still running, it has not completed. It stops all of a sudden, with no other file after it. Has anyone else had any similar experience? Now Moser Baer has this quality assurance thing, and they take back damaged stuff, so would this qualify as damaged?

instead of opening the files individually why don't u run it from the main ifo file? imho quality of moser baer dvd's suck with respect to video and with audio, sometimes worse than a pre dvd. if you can, try getting the non-moser baer dvd from abroad or download it from a torrent site...

I've tried inserting the DVD again to see if maybe it would work, but the problem of the eighth file being the last file is still there. However, I opened the movie with VLC player and it is able to play the full movie :D not sure exactly how it does it. It shows the entire timeline of about two hours and something minutes. After the part where the eighth file ends, there is more than half an hour of movie left! So in a way the problem is solved. But I still can't understand why there's problems with displaying the files; anyone know anything about this?

I didnt find any encoding problems with moder baer dvd's , encoding by all companies is done in the same manner so i dont understand how can there be a difference ther ones you are talking about are very old movies which are encoded from analog sources hence the crappy quality

i'd suggest you to take a look at zulm.net, they compare different dvd's. I once rented an old movie from the original distributor much before moser baer started their dvd's and ripped it to my pc. Later, when MB started making dvd's I thought I'd get the same movie on dvd and delete the 8 Gb copy which I had on my hard drive. That's when I noticed the difference; the picture quality was pathetic and the audio had a lot of clicks and pops and was irritating to the ears; such a waste of a dual layer dvd... It was evident that they had not done any post processing on their master... perhaps that's how they get their costs low? It's the same case with all MB dvd's....

I thought Moser Baer wouldn't compromise on the quality. This is no way to fight piracy. Or maybe it is - it might stop people from buying from the laaris, but for those who want better quality, maybe we'll have to look elsewhere... btw, any suggestions on what information to look for on the DVD cover to get an idea of the quality of the movie?

Moser Baer must concentrate on better packing. Some shops simply dump the dvds in a box, eith cd/dvds spilling over. Of course, potential buyers also just throw the dvd in the box after a cursory glance. It happened to Cadbury chocolates 2 years ago. The cheap ones were simply wrapped in foil and those sold in kirana shops and small shops had worms in them; cadbury had a difficult time in proving the product was ok when it left the factory and in recovering its name. Now it packs the product in sealed plastic pouches.
