CHENNAI: The cable war between Sun
TV Network Limited and Royal Cable Vision (RCV), Madurai, before the Madras High Court seems to have ended for the time being with Sun TV withdrawing its petition seeking a direction to the State government to instruct the police to receive its complaints with regard to illegal tapping of its signals.
The withdrawal of the petition follows the patch-up between the Marans and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
In the writ petition, the satellite channel, represented by its Authorised Signatory, L. Jotheeswaran, said RCV and 12 cable operators, also of Madurai (cited as respondents), were illegally tapping Sun TV’s signals in a systematic manner in different parts of the State.
It was the Tamil Nadu government’s duty to protect the rights of the petitioner and prevent the unlawful and illegal activities. He submitted that police personnel refused to entertain and investigate complaints.
When the matter came up before Justice P.R. Shivakumar on Wednesday, the petitioner’s counsel submitted that the petition was being withdrawn.
Meanwhile, the High Court has permitted the withdrawal of another petition seeking a mandamus directing the State government to continue to give advertisements as it was done in the past in the same quantity to ‘Dinakaran,’ a Tamil daily, and ‘Tamil Murasu.’
When the case came up before Justice K. Venkataraman, counsel Vijayanarayanan said the petitioner could be permitted to withdraw the petition.
In his order, Justice K. Venkataraman said he was permitting the petitioner to withdraw the writ petition with liberty to raise all contentions in the petition at a later stage if an occasion arose.
In Madurai, RCV, which is backed by M.K. Azhagiri, son of Mr. Karunanidhi, got decoders for popular pay channels from the Sun TV network on Wednesday.
“We got the decoders for Sun TV, KTV, Sun News and Sun
Music this afternoon. The channels are on air through our network from evening,” said an official of RCV.
“Issue settled”
“The issue has been settled out of court and now subscribers of our network can watch all these channels,” he said. The cable war in the city saw snapping of overhead cables of operators, registration of many police cases and arrest of the operators after the inception of RCV in June.
