Airtel's 3G launch is right up there with the Hindenburg and the Edsel. What a #fail.I haven't been able to activate yet and I've been trying from the second they launched at midnight.
I tried that for 5 times and called around 15 times.. finally they told me. it was a technical error as even they activated from their side but never worked.. so told me to meet with my 2G sim with nearest airtel office.. so dumb..
Hi I am new user to this forum. And today only I activated my Airtel 3G service. I am not at all crossing more than 700 kbps download speed, even my mobile (Nokia 5230) is showing full signal strength. I am from chennai. Does this problem is facing me alone or some one else there (from chennai) with this trouble. Plz let me know.:thumb:

My phone was able to connect to a 3G tower, but nothing else worked. Browser did not get connected, Maps could not find location, etc. When I called customer care they said there is a common browsing problem to all users and it will be rectified in 6hours. I waited till next day morning and then deactivated 3G services as none of the customer care executive could give a clear reason why it is not working. Iphone cannot download settings, but still they send an SMS to contact 17171 to download settings. When I called 17171 the entire help menu did not have a selection for Iphone. Not sure why Airtel sold iphone as SIM-locked when they ignore iphone while releasing such new service. Please let me know if any one from Chennai was successful in using 3G services.....Thanks.

3G works fine on the iPhone 4. You cannot change Airtel settings on an iPhone. The settings are hardcoded in iOS since Airtel is an official carrier. 3G works without any modification of the settings (there are no settings to modify in the first place since official carriers' settings are locked in the OS).
Do you mean that there is no setting needed either on the handset side and on the service provider side for iPhone 3GS to work on 3G? I have a 3GS bought from Airtel, but it didnt work when I enabled 3G services as per the process mentioned in Airtel website. Is your Iphone4 locked with Airtel? how did you enable 3G on your phone? Please help with details so that I can check enabling 3G again. Thanks for your response...
atlast activated airtel 3g on my Nokia mobile just tested the max speed and it crossed 2mbps-3mbps
may be in data card we can find the actual max speed!!!

after activation of 3g u need to contact cutomer care to select ur 3G plans
else only video calls will be activated by default(charges 3rs/min)

My phone is factory unlocked (I actually tried it on my friends iPhone which is also unlocked and it works fine; he has postpaid). The network settings are embedded in iOS for ALL official carriers. You CANNOT normally change any network settings if you are using a SIM from an official carrier (such as Airtel). It doesn't matter whether your phone is locked or unlocked. If the SIM is from an official carrier, then the network settings get disabled.
Just call them and ask them to enable it if you are postpaid. For prepaid SMS "3G" to 121. Then SMS "1" to confirm. Their activation system is broken for many people, you just have to wait till they fix it. If it activates, you'll get an SMS telling you to choose your plan. It's auto renewal system where it deducts from your balance every month. If you don't choose a plan you pay 30p/20KiB.
Thanks for the information and help Torch. I have raised a request with customer care to enable 3G on my postpaid number. got an SMS that my reqeust is registered and will be activated in 4Hrs. I am waiting now....Thanks once again.
