@vishalrao old 4G Sims are being asked to be replaced because of Volte and SRVCC(Single Radio voice call continuity). Once Volte is launched on Airtel 4G network and the user goes out of 4G network range in the middle of the call and lands on 3g/2G network then call continuity should be maintained and sim should support this. Else old sim will continue to lose network and keep hoping 3G and 2G network with delay and phone will keep searching for better network.

but people with non-4g sims would never be able to use volte right? so why irritate them?

@Sushubh Here is the catch. With latest IUC notification reducing IUC charges and other statuary fees/taxes paid to govt for using 900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz for older technologies. They want to force customer to move to 4G and use Volte only, so that cost of maintaining parallel networks can be brought down.
Coming to your old reply on wether 2G and 3G closing down. then the answer is yes but it will be sedate move and customer will not feel. Airtel will swiftly move customer to 4G and keep 3G for backup for SRVCC and close 2G in parallel. and when 4G coverage is mature enough then pull plug off 3g as well. Airtel's gopal announced this too..

Jio is saving huge money, because it show 4G 2300Mhz data customers and there is no way DOT can find if the customer was on 1800, 850 Mhz and what was the cost for SUC(spectrum usage charge) at the given time and duration. Hence it paid paltry 1000 crore SUC and AVOID paid 15000 Crore together

people would need 4g devices to switch to 4g networks. i do not think featurephones on sale in india support even 3g networks. and people who already have 4g phones are already likely to be using 4g sims so basically, i do not see what they are trying to do here. people with 3g devices would not connect to their 4g networks. people like me on non-volte 4g devices like nexus 6p would never use volte again.

@Sushubh better wait and see what happens after you upgrade to new 4G sims. If you continue to use 2G, 3G network then another message will come in couple of months that Airtel is switching off 2G network and advice its customer to upgrade to 4G volte devices to continue enjoying Airtel services...
This is forced migration and it has never happened in Indian telecom history but current dynamics forcing Avoid to do this. Even AVOID is against it but can't help...

reliance did the same when they shut down their cdma network and god knows how many devices just became paperweight. i would imagine there are a lot more 2g only featurephones out there. the number is likely to be staggering even though everyone seems to be carrying a smartphone these days.

TRAI in its defence of IUC to mumbai high court and 60 Page reference document has said necessary migration to new technology like VOLTE some 15 times. Now you can imagine who is forcing the operators ....
But my opinion it is one way good. Because theoretically Volte means very negligible call drops, quicker call connecting time, HD wide band voice quality. Basically clarity is like talking face to face...

So unsuspecting people on this thread should get ready for switching off of 2g 3g network much faster than they anticipate...

maybe trai should wait for volte featurephones to arrive in the market. or at least encourage mobile phone companies to launch such devices. budget segment smartphones are mostly shite. you are basically forcing shitty devices on customers in the name of new and improved technologies.
