Amazon India is killing free Prime shipping of groceries by moving it all to Pantry

Amazon seems to be slowing removing grocery items from regular Prime and making them available through Pantry. I might be mistaken but a lot of products that were easily available to order directly through Prime nowadays only seem to be listed under Pantry.

This was not a big issue because Pantry orders were free for Prime users. But they no longer are. You have to create a box with value of Rs. 599 to get the Pantry delivery free. Otherwise you pay Rs. 20. This is more than what you need to order from Amazon regular to get a free delivery afaik.

There is another thing. Pantry boxes are supposed to have a uniform size. When you add products, you are told that x% of the box is now full. You get an idea on how many boxes would arrive at your place for the products you are ordering.

I wanted to order a certain product that was only in stock under Pantry. To get free delivery, I checked with mom and added a few more products. Crossed Rs. 599. The box was barely 20% full. I paid.

I got the delivery today and the box is much smaller than what it should be. It seems like a regular box that they would have used for a regular delivery without Pantry.

This kind of sends an impression that eventually groceries and maybe more articles might end up becoming Pantry exclusive. Rendering Prime useless for such purchases (unless you are willing to pay Rs. 20 per box for home delivery).

This is my personal experience right now. Nishant has ordered a Pantry box which is also partially filled. Would be fun to see what sized box he gets for his delivery. I suggested him to use Pantry for the product he wanted to buy because of the larger box filled with air pouches to better protect the grocery item being shipped. He got a messed up package during a non-pantry delivery from Amazon recently because package was all crushed up during shipping.

another thing is that they have so many different products catering to the same market. Amazon prime, amazon now, amazon pantry. why not just let me pick a product and they can use the route most cost efficient to them. it does not matter how my product comes to me. from a local store or from some reseller based in telangana.

here is a screenshot of an annoying search result.
prime is selected.
pantry is not selected.
all the top search results are for pantry.
insane.

Amazon no longer has pantry option in Bangalore. They have tied up with More stores and have launched hyper local service called Amazon Fresh (rebranded prime now) which has limited grocery options and has vegetables/fruits/dairy/perishable etc. Min order is 600 for anything less 29 Shipping fees. You would get the order on same day within 2hrs. However due to covid nowadays its min 1-2 days. Flipkart also has a similar hyperlocal service called quick which is only available on Mobile app. However they still have Flipkart Grocery service. Soon i think they will add more cities and pantry will be obsolete.

Same here in Pune 600 min for free delivery else 29 charge, though I don't know who they have tied up with for Amazon Fresh, could be More chain as it was present in Pune before.
