early technology adopters/betters always get screwed... i bought some Sony MiniDisc players a few years ago thinking they would replace CDs, but now look at the situation (i have the original massive "MZ-1" minidisc recorder model of theirs

Exactly. I was one of the first few to get a PS1 back in 2000, when I got one from US. I didnt knew a thing about the region coding those days Till date neither was I able to play the disks which I bought in India nor was unable to mod it as this version (model) is not compatable with the mod chips available here. I think I had it way too early when it was released in market.
