For Tata-Sky to add so many malayalam channels, two things will need to happen:

1. The Hindi block (100-199) will have to be split right down the middle, the religious channels will have to be moved to < 150 and 150 and above will have to be reserved for Malayalam, because 10 slots are not sufficient (what were they thinking when they allocated the slots in the first place).
2. Tata-Sky will have to bring in a new management team headed by a Malayali.

Otherwise, this is not going to happen.
Gregory,
What number of Channels can Tata Sky include in their DTH package, I suppose it is 200 and now they are only showing 100 channels which means there are space for 100 more, so don't you think that they can include 16 number of Malayalam Channels. Otherwise they will have to lease another Satellite to beam in only the Regional Channels that adding up in India.

144 channels (12tps * 12 channels; mpeg2 compression) is the supposed capacity. They are already broadcasting 111 (not counting radio and other hidden channels like the music you hear on the menu). Add 15 sun channels and you get 126. That leaves 18 more. If they add (19 - 6 - 2 = 11) more malayalam channels, that leaves 7 channels. Lets round it up to 10.

So only 10 more channels may be added before capacity runs out. And lots of channels are still missing:
1. Zee Sports, Neo, Neo Sports +, Goal.
2. 4-5 Marathi channels.
3. A few gujarathi, punjabi, bengali and other regional channels.
4. Zoom
5. Sahara Firangi (will launch soon)
There will be a riot if so many regional channels from one or two languages (talking about tamil and malayalam because they have the numbers) are added leaving everybody else out to dry.

Otherwise they will have to lease another Satellite to beam in only the Regional Channels that adding up in India.
Regarding leasing other satellites, DirecTv is doing just that (in the US). But I don't think Tata-Sky's business plans even consider such a possibility. So, I doubt if any regional language will have more than ten channels. You may have to choose the ten best channels that you would like to have.

This is from the horse's mouth, press release of Tata Sky in 2005.

The transponders leased on INSAT 4A will allow Tata Sky to transmit around 150 channels in digital quality to every Indian home, however remote it may be.

Gregory,

If they choose MPEG4 compression can they add more channels? Excuse me if am pestering you. I think you are very technical minded and intelligent

Mr. Gregory which dth service are you using at this point of time (I belive ur using TSky). Tell me what do you think of Tata Sky future as they have got 3000 crores in their hands.

No pestering. I like answering questions as long as they fall in my area of interest. Actually I was thinking about mpeg4 and how much Tata-Sky will have to spend to do a roll out, when I pressed F5 and your question came up.

mpeg4 will allow about 240 channels; 20 per transponder (figure from Sun Direct press release). But it is a complicated and long drawn process.

1. Tata-Sky will have to change all the relevant equipment in its transmission centre.
2. New set top boxes capable of decoding mpeg4 transmission will have to be provided to all subscribers.

Once this is done, 240 high quality channels may be broadcast. But it will be a very costly process. Assuming an expenditure of INR 5000 per subscriber and INR 100 crores on its centre, we get a total figure of about INR 600 crores (INR 5000 * 1,000,000 subscribers + INR 100 crores). This is just my opinion.

This will result in a partial/ complete blackout for the amount of time it takes to complete the process, if it can be completed at all.

If Tata-Sky is willing to foot the bill and is capable of doing it, then it should do it

I am a Tata-Sky subscriber, and I think they have a good future ahead of them (as long as they can get their obstinate behaviour sorted out). I believe that they are technically far superior to any present or future competition since they have the same lineage as DirecTv and Sky UK.
But technical superiority is a poor selling proposition without good content which can be delivered using that technology. Content is king and they are sorely lacking on that front.

The MPEG4 compression is very beneficial for the the subscribers as well as the operator. MPEG4 allows for HDTV facilities and also enables to carry more channels per transponder. Presently a transponder carries 18 channels and with MPEG4 approximately 30 channels may be carried on a single transponder reducing the transponder cost per channel

Tata Sky is using exact technology adopetd by SKY UK, so technically TATASKY is as same as SKY UK, BUT look at the channel content SKY UK has
Sky Digital on Astra 2A/2B/2D & Eurobird 1 at 28.2°E - LyngSat
They have almost channels from all regions of world & of all genere, TATASKY still even could'nt satisfy all regional viewers regarding content. TATASKY should get aggressive in planning for providing more content with available facilities
