Tamil Nadu Chief minister M Karunanidhi has asked district collectors to extend support and co-operation to the state-owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation to be launched in all the districts, except Chennai, on July 15.

Functioning as a multi-system operator (MSO) the cable corporation will provide signals to operators throughout the state. The decision to roll out the service on July 15 was made at the end of the two-day conference of collectors.

The service may end turf wars and conflicts among existing MSOs in various cities. In particular, there has been open confrontation in Madurai between Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV) owned by the Maran brothers, grand-nephews of Karunanidhi and Royal Cable Vision, recently started by the family of M K Azhagiri, elder son of the chief minister.

The government's cable network in Chennai is likely to be rolled out in September. In other decisions at the conference, collectors were asked to take immediate action on complaints of free colour television sets given by the government being sold away by the beneficiaries.

The government has come forward to give a stipend of Rs 400 per month for unemployed and unmarried women above the age of 50.
