Hi, I have a D-Link 2730u indian model wifi modem router, that supports wifi and it is called N150 , meaning that its speed is 150mbps on wifi.
I get my wifi access thro the lan ethernet connection on wifi support devices.
My presumption:
1. ISP has bandwidth control on the broadband speed with the plan that I select.
2. The router has been connecting the wifi devices on the access point provided in the router.
3. Eventhough, the ISP provide access point via the ethernet connection by telephonic wire , he has no control over the wifi speed accessed with my router.
4. I have a 2.4 ghz speed router, which supports minium speed , and If i change the router to a 5ghz speed router, then i could get more speed on my wifi devices, the dual wifi router would give better speed and area coverage.
5. The ISP has no say on the speed of the wifi and it is entirely controlled by the router wifi power.
Please say, what I have presumed are correct , point by point, so that i will buy a new router that supports 5ghz speed
 
WIll provide you with basic details, you need to read/research further if you need better understanding.
Your maximum speed depends on the plan what you have subscribed from BSNL. Ex: For 10Mbps plan the max speed you get is 10Mbps , even though you have 150Mbps wifi router. On wifi router the speed decreases as signal of your wifi drops. Ex If you are closer to the router you will get actual speed.

On fiber there is no interference and you can expect Max speed of the plan you have subscribed (Ex: 10Mbps plan) at the termination point which is your home. If you are on ADSL(telephone copper wire) there will be interference and your max speed will decrease the further your home is from exchange (ex: if your plan is 10 mbps and you are 2Kms from exhange your max speed will reduce to 6-8mbps). You can search in this forum about speed vs snr for ADSL line.

5Ghz wifi is needed only if you have a plan above 100 Mbps.

My question is not about broadband speed. It is about wifi speed.
if there is no connection between wifi speed and ISP bb speed, then, wifi speed entirely dependent on routers .
I am getting 12mbps speed on my present plan, eventhough attainable is 22 mbps , plan speed 20 mbps, I am happy with the broadband speed.But with regard to wifi speed, which i presume only depends upon router capacity of wifi , then I am thinking of buying a dual band wifi with modem router. If the access point is only the creteria about wifi connection, the speed entirely depends upon router capacity.
So, I ask if all my presumptions are correct.
I expect a point by point say of correct or not for all the points I raised
 
1) yes. 2) technically yes but didn't get what you want to ask. 3) ISP has complete bandwidth control not specific to WiFi or lan. 4) you can take dual band router for better speed(provided device connected to it supports dual band) also you need to use it as access point or ADSL with dual band but, it is not future proof. 5) total bandwidth is divided in speeds used by all the connected devices.
 
@rajujayaraman Most of your questions are not clear to answer to each point. Anyway, try connecting your laptop/desktop to modem using LAN cable and check what speeds you are getting. If there is a big difference between LAN and wi-fi speeds, think of buying a new router. For your speeds you don't need dual-band router. I think your SNR might be too high , hence you are getting 12 mbps.
As i said if you google on these topics you will get lot of info.
 
vikram, Your four points are making me clear about the fact, that the ISP is also controlling bandwidth of lan and wifi.
Regarding the 5 th point, still having confusion about , how total bandwidth is divided among all the connected devices if the fixed ethernet speed and radio wave speed are related to.
May be I am not able to put it forth in clear terms.

does the ISP has anything to do with wifi bandwidth. Here I am having confusion.
My presumption from the readings on the web:
access point is provided by the ISP for wifi and all other things , including bandwidth of wifi are entirely dependent on the wifi capacity of your router. please clarify

Are you asking if your Wi-Fi bandwidth is decided by your ISP?

Your Local Wi-Fi bandwidth is decided by your own devices and not by BSNL or any ISPs. This is the network you have inside your home not to any websites hosted outside (Google, etc).

You can use a higher speed wifi access point or router to increase your local Wi-Fi speed. Your phones, laptops should also support this speed.

In your particular case even if your DSL-2730U is capable of 150mbps most phones are not. They'll only go upto 72mbps.

Hope that clears it all.

BTW, your internet speed to websites and services like YouTube, Facebook etc are decided by your ISP and you can not change it.
 
@rajujayaraman if you are getting speed less than 12mbps (when no other device is using it internet) on WiFi then it makes sense to get new one but this shoud not be the case. Best is to ask ISP in your case.
 
adithya, thank you . my thinking is I am using this router for long and If i change the router to dual band, that supports both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz as modem with wifi router, then I stand to gain wifi speed. Now I understand and you have said it so in clear words.
There are dual band routers, but what I find is , most dual band does not have modem but only wireless.
What I want is a modem with wifi router dual band support, it will be good for me to channel configuration of both internet and wifi.
Adhithya, would you recommend this kind of dual band device for me.

If I ask a technician he will bring a router, but a older model
