Recently bought a new 3G SIM from Vodafone.
When asked about the price, they said it would be 215 with 99 talktime.
On detailed questioning they said that m-Pesa comes kind of connected with this SIM, so there is no way currently to buy a SIM without it and it has Rs 100 one time activation charge.
I did not need m-Pesa, however since I needed the SIM kind of urgently and did not know of another Voda shop nearby I just had to buy that.
Later on chatting with Voda care, they said it is not necessary to get an m-Pesa account with a new SIM.
I think I also saw that guy pushing this BS service to others that day and one of his seniors telling him to get more m-Pesa subscribers because his senior had told him so !
So i think it was just a ploy to get 100 from subscribers by lying to them if necessary.
It might be a good service for those who need it, but should not be forced on those who don't.
Just wanted to make people more aware of this, so that they don't fall into the same trap.
