that is the problem. we already pay a lot of money in form of taxes and other surcharges for such projects... every liter of petrol and diesel has 1-2 rupee cess for road development.then there is a thing called road tax. the mess we have here on the delhi gurgaon expressway is such that most people prefer the times when there was no expressway at all. the government could have just made decent roads connecting delhi and gurgaon. but they decided to call it an expressway and put on a toll tax that we would pay for ever.

Middle class person doesnt have 75Rs to spend everyday OR 2500Rs every month. Taxi owners with montly pass will eventually cover the expense from us only.

And Mumbai Pune express highway is still very long, 200km, and saves lots of time too.

Wheareas charging 50Rs per trip for 5.6 km and for saving 15mins, is logic less
Agreed.
So people are not interested in paying directly for tolls, but willingly pay for extra fuel which gets consumed in slow moving traffic.
That 5.6 Km road takes 15-30 min in peak hours. For that much time vehicle is ON consuming fuel. But if this link is used, that much fuel (and cost occuring for that) would be saved.
And anyways this link (or Mumbai-Pune e'way) is not mandatory for all travellers, so interested people can use it :)
(Even though toll-free old road for Mumbai-Pune is also available, many people prefer E'way with toll)

the question is... how much time would be wasted on the toll plaza itself. if it is anything like here on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, you are not going to save much :D please forgive me for bringing in the DGE mess in each of my post. i am just giving an example of a totally failed toll project by the indian government :hysterical:the funny thing is that the government has left few alternatives for us to go to delhi. there is another road which takes you to another part of delhi... so that is practically worthless if you have to visit south delhi. there is another road that bypasses the toll plaza but they have made it quite complicated to get on the expressway after that region.

i dont think lot of fuel gets wasted in 10-15 extra mins. u can say instead of 5.6 km, current road wud be effectively taking say 9km. so abt 3km petrol extra. that is still not much.and admin has a point, if toll plaza will take lot of time (even 3-4mins) then it wud not make any sense.

More Time required at toll plaza is bad.
So I guess Mumbai Sea link are using some automatic system for Monthly pass vehicles, and they would not have to wait at toll point. When vehicle passes the toll point, it would automatically detected & charged by some tag put on vechicle.
Bandra-Worli Sea Link - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- An 8-lane bridge with 2 lanes dedicated for buses.
- Unique bridge design for the Link Bridge to emerge as a landmark structure in the city.
- Single tower supported 500 metre long cable-stayed bridge at Bandra Channel and twin tower supported 350 m cable-stayed bridge at Worli Channel for each carriageway.
- Modern toll plaza of 16 lanes with automated toll collection system.
- An intelligent bridge with state-of-the-art systems for traffic monitoring, surveillance, information and guidance, instrumentation, emergency support, etc.
- Development of promenade and landscaping to enhance the environment.

Now the point is, how this automatic system work? Person will have to fix some instrument in the car right? So how much will that instrument cost? What is instrument is stolen? What if instrument gets some fault? All these is added burden on middle class man. These questions are endless.

heh. we have the automated tag system. the company operating the toll plaza charges 1500 bucks for that tag!

and we get no discount for using that tag. we pay the regular price.

and you know the problem?

they do not stop cars with no tags from entering into the tag only lanes.

so the cars with tags end up behind cars with no tags. and these guys waste our time by paying manually on the plaza itself.

the system is designed to work fine. but if no one is there to manage it... all we get is a mess.

Delhi Gurgaon Expressway Toll Booth Mess! i have videos of me waiting in long lines on the toll plaza on these smart tag enabled lanes. you are not supposed to wait more than a minute or so. but during rush hours, you can end up waiting in line for as long as 30 minutes.

----------

amish...

the tag system works great. you get the device. you attach it on the inside of the car on the windshield. it is detected by the system as soon as you are in front of it. i can confirm that it works fine. you can slow down your car to avoid any potential problems... but even on speeds of 10-20 kmph is ok while crossing the toll booth.

----------

by the way, i got the smart tag for free coz i got it during the launch period when they were giving out for free. now they charge between 1000-1500 bucks i think.

when i got mine, they were delivering it for free! you just had to pay 500 or more which was added as a balance. the new charges are without any value i think.

now, we are required to go to their offices and stand in line. and those counters are not even open 24x7!

These questions are endless.
Yes questions are endless, but this is just a beginning :)
We would come to know if it is success or failure after the link is in use for 1 year. Then we can know (if reports are published) that was the link worth or not.

media is going to be useless. they raised the issues faced by us for a couple of weeks. no one talks about it now.

it is for us to talk about it and make public aware. :P i am doing my part by publishing my experiences about the delhi gurgaon expressway on a blog... :)

----------

another interesting fact... as per early media reports... the expressway connecting delhi and gurgaon...

the government and the company (DSC Limited) had agreed that the waiting time should not be more than 30 seconds to 1 minute. if it gets more than that the toll plaza would have to let the traffic go without stopping for payments.

they followed it for a couple of days.

after that the reports said that the company had renegotiated to increase the waiting time limit from 1 minute to five. after a couple of days i heard that it was up to 10 minutes.

now, even if you have to wait for more than 10 minutes, they NEVER open the toll booths for free flow of traffic. no matter what the situation is.

but they do open up the toll booth for red light loaded cars. without any verifications! i have seen that happening.

i am not sure though if they had open it for ambulances... :) especially the private ones. i bet people have/would die because of the mess at this toll plaza. :wall:

With questions surrounding BW Sea link, I dont see many people wud use it on daily basis. They need to reduce toll to 5 to 10Rs to make it worth.
