Got a mail from hdfc bank all transactions on debit card at retails will require atm pin to be punched in and the security measure they advised was insist on entering the pin yourself and cover it with hand or body.
Now i know each and every retailer with cctv in his shop knows my atm pin thanks for feeling me a lot safer hdfc bank.

in european countries pos to enter pin they have separate keypad with extended wire hanging on customer side.

A tip: if your transactions are getting rejected because the merchant is bypassing the pin then ask him to not to bypass it. Today morning again my transaction was getting rejected. I told him since your machine is not asking for pin that's the reason transaction is rejected. So he asked the guy sitting behind "Yaar voh pin bypass ke baad pin laana hai kya karun" he pressed a key or 2 on the machine and then the machine prompted me for pin and transaction went throughin european countries pos to enter pin they have separate keypad with extended wire hanging on customer side.
Have you seen the machines SBI is using at its counter in bank. They have a swiping machine just outside the counter and keypad attached to it. So its more safe for me. Your card stays in your hand.

Reminds me. I should request a new Debit Card from ICICI Bank. The one I have is like 10 years old and have not been used in a machine for like ever. At least the numbers on the back are accepted so it has worked for me.

I have never used Debit Card in retail stores. I still wonder why I am paying Rs.100 annually (for a HDFC card) when I can pay one time Rs.100 & get an ATM card which can be used with no annual payment. Maybe this is the right time to get it done :|

I thought it was a RBI regulation that mandates Debit Cards in all banks/
I am assuming you cannot use ATM Card in machines operated by other banks?
I am not even sure if private banks offer ATM cards today.

Ok.. Quick question has this been implemented so that all have to use ATM pin at "all" retail stores.
I received a gift card from my company. But apparently the cover was open when I was handed over & no one has a clue of why there is no ATM pin (I checked some preloaded balance is there). The bank says it will charge Rs.100 for resetting pin. It requires ATM pin to generate Internet Pin.
I am thinking if I can simply swipe this card without the need for entering the PIN at a local store to buy something before they make sure no one is able to use any debit card at all without a Pin..
P.S it will be hilarious if I have to shell out Rs.100 to be able to use the "gift card"
