As far as unlocked phones go - They are available at a premium price even abroad wherever the local laws make it compulsory to sell unlocked phones as well. e.g. in Belgium it is 525 Euros.
In US, the contract free but LOCKED phone is available for 600 dollars.
Sadly Apple never has had any India strategy and that is the problem.

apple's profit margin on iPhone 3g is pretty huge already.
you said it right. they have a very flawed strategy for india. and they are losing out big time around here.
indian customers pay big money for mobile phones. they do not buy them subsidized but they like to have freedom using the phone.
apple has not given them the freedom yet they are charging them unsubsidized prices.
the point is, if you are not giving out any price benefits to the customer why are you locking them to a single service provider?
looking at the number of new mobile customers in india, apple is making a mistake not getting the numbers they can easily get from the indian market.
india's mobile market is huge and still growing at a rapid pace.

i guess Nokia discarded any strategy to take on iPhone in india after the prices were announced. basically Apple shot themselves in the foot. i am surprised samsung is not taking on the iphone in india. they are the most aggressive mobile companies we have in the market. they paid huge to aamir khan. they need to get out more interesting phones in the market.

if used in contract, indian cost is NOW at par with that of US

taking thru citibank,
2872*12=34464 (no one-time processing charges)
US:
$199+$36(activation)
minimum plan: $ 70/month of which at least $15/month is for iPhone (since for the same number of minutes & unltd data plan can be obtained at $55/month in at&t)
15*24 months=$360
total=199+36+360=$595 @ 44.5 = (roughly) 26500
with 25% import duty = 33125
some post initially in this thread that even 12.5% VAT is applicable. i'm not sure of that
so more or less same in both countries. there they are putting it in the plan & its offered by at&t. here operators dont want to get to the court hassle in case of defaults, so they roped in the banks & their recovery agents
want to save money? try to get it without contract, but in india its overpriced so the only option is to wait for the unlock & get it from US in cheap :thumbsup:
