MUMBAI: Big TV, the direct-to-home (DTH) arm of Reliance Communications, has mopped up 500,000 subscribers within two months of launch and expects to touch five million in the first year of its operations, a senior company executive said.

"Almost 50 per cent of our subscribers have come from the South. We have had an average run rate of 10,000 and touched 500,000 subscribers in 50 days. This is equivalent to 40 per cent of the industry's gross additions during the last two months. About 60-70 per cent of our subscribers have come from the top 200 towns," said Big TV president Arun Kapoor.

As part of its ramp-up plan, Reliance has also tied up with LG to offer its DTH service at Rs 700 (instead of Rs 1490) for those customers who buy 29-inch television sets. The offer is valid till 31 October.

"The total DTH subscriber base will expand to 18 million and we would be touching five million subscribers with 12 months of operations. We are fully-geared to add over 400,000 subscribers every month with an on-ground infrastructure spanning 6500 Indian towns," said Kapoor.

Big TV will be launching its DVR service this year. "We are also coming up with interactive cricket and interactive news within two months. We are in talks with a leading sports broadcaster and two news channels," said Kapoor.

Big TV expects to offer 15-20 HD channels by the middle of next year, adds Kapoor.

Big TV will be doubling its channel bouquet to 400 by next year. It will add four more Ku-band transponders to its current eight on Measat, which will enable it to offer more channels.

Other dth players atleast will act fast to do something, but SunDirect will always sleep as they always do.:madness:

Last week we had an article in Ahmedabad Mirror (TOI Small Baby) - BIG TV sold 50,000 in 1 month after launch.BUT i guess thats because of their bad marketing tactics:- Over 200 Channels (we still have 187)- 32 Cinema Halls (BUT not free - we have to pay more than their Big Flix subscription for a month for unlimited movies everyday)- No interactive services at the moment (since 1 and half year if they are doing RND and still have no such services then its a shame) I am fed up of that 187 mark. I am still waiting for Colors, B4U, ETC Music, Australia Network, TV9 Gujarat and lot many missing channels!!!

It should decrease and they should layoff their lazy unskilled employees. Look at the TS and Airtel - what they have done is excellent (Even airtel is just a week born baby, and still have lots of interactive services and all features are in good quality).Reliance must take lessons to get everything right first and then get ready for launch - rather pissing off their customers for initial 2 years to get their own services working!

Do you think those 5 lakh subscribers have a choice now ?Whether they like it or not, they are stuck with Big TV for a year.If Big Tv thinks they got the customers due to their quality, content and service, let them give an option of "cancel the subscription " even with 50% deduction & I am sure there will be even less than a lakh of customers remaining with them.I will tell you why:I puchased a pack of Rs.2190 a month ago.I paid the amount when dealer committed that I will get the listed channels ( that included HBO, neo sports etc..) for a year & I won't have to pay single paisa extra for a year.I got the installation done a month ago & even then I was not warned that some of the channels are for trial basis only .I got a rude shock today when they deactivated the channels saying I need to shell out more than 200 for those channnels or else continue watching the given channel for a year because there is no cancellation option i.e. no refund. Now I am stuck with dead wood in my hands.Rs.2190 for a year means roughly Rs.185 per month for the same channels for which I was already paying my local cable operator Rs.100 every month with complete freedom as to control over my account. So, I sincerely ask / PLEAD with anyone who intends to try Big Tv: STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM IT or you'll suffer my fate. These guys are the masters of "customer harassment". They did it four years ago with their mobile service and they ae doing it again with Big TV. Same thugs same story & same kind of fools like me who fall into their trap again . I hope whoever reads this will benefit from it.

no DTH customer in the market has any real choice. the packages are limited. channels cannot be ordered individually. it's total madness.

Another one bites the dust! :|The story will never end. People, please be cautious before you make any decision. And most importantly, read IBF before making any choice related to broadband or dth. :thumb:
