I have a BSNL UT300R2U modem/router (1 eth + 1 usb), from which i access BSNL Broadband on my PC. My cousin brother has come over to stay with us for a year, and we're looking at how we can enable wireless connectivity for his office laptop (new IBM ThinkPad T60) to use BSNL Broadband. Since he is able to access wireless connectivity in his office, i assume we don't need to buy a wireless adapter.I understand that the UT300R2U is a router by itself, so do i need to purchase a Wireless Router from D-Link or Netgear or Linksys, etc or is a 'wireless access point' the solution? A wireless router costs around INR 2200, and i have no idea what a wireless access point is, let alone know how much a Wireless access point would cost.Totally new to wireless connectivity, would appreciate suggestions on how to get this done - what i need to buy, which brand, which would give me the most wireless reach - our house is the slightly older type, the modem/comp is in the 2nd floor, so i need him to be able to access the Net on all 3 floors, if possible (a height of 70-80 metres with walls in between)...Thanks in advance folks!

buffalo is pretty good ..buy it if available in ur city..stay away from Netgear..also..u should be looking to buy a wireless router and not an access point coz with an access point u'll need to buy a hub as well to get simultaneous ethernet connectivity on both desktop and laptop

Thanks to Kanishka and Cyberwiz.

I checked prices of a few brands, and all of them are in the same price band - between INR 2 - 3.5 K.

Will only a wireless router serve my needs or do i need to buy a wireless router with/separate wireless adapter as well?

Cyberwiz: I live in Chennai. Do you or any other members have any idea if Buffalo wireless products are available in Chennai?

Has anyone previous experience with UT300R2U + wireless router? any advice on whether i should go ahead with this / any particular combination so as to get it right, and any ideas on how i set this whole thing up?

Thank you.

^ considering this for laptop u dont need an adapter...if u dont wanna connect ur PC with a wire then u need a PCI/USB wireless adapter for wireless access on Desktop

setting up is not difficult there are many who are using wireless routers with UT300r2U..

@swaminath_ptWelcome to broadbandforum.coRitchie Street, opposite lane of VGP showrooms/ junctionin Mount road now known as Anna SalaiDepends on the range you expect your laptop tofunction. Say from ground floor to 4th floor.Any normal WIFI router claims range within a radius of30 to 40 feet. (*conditions apply)Some with Dual Antenna can increase the Range. Some have facility to attach an external antenna.Lowest quotation:Netgear WGR614 v6 which I am using for last six months.within the same floor Distance (working Ok )about 20 feet. Buffalo models costlier and recommended.Para two : If modem on rent exchange it for a Type II or IV.

i would recommend Linksys WRT54GL or Linksys WRT54G

I am using Netgear WGR614v9 with UT300R2U and its awesome!! Great range and signals... Dunno about three floors but it works great in 2 floors of my home... :P
