D-Link the adapter was broken My friend is taking it back.

May I know why it did not work with Baton router ? We tried seveal possibilities. DHCP does not work.

Do you feel it is a port problem with BSNL ?

As far as I can see it has something to do with your modem. What all did you try with Baton router ? Was it a WiFi router alone or a modem + router ?

Can you ping 192.168.1.1 on ubuntu? Open Terminal to ping.
Did they reset your modem? If so you have to enter your broadband user pass again by selecting PPPoE in modem page.
Also check if DHCP is off in your modem, turn it on.
If that doesn't work, you will need to manually enter IP addresses in Network Connections.

In your case:
IP address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet/Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

Should get you connected.

Gambit - that is what happened ultimately. I had to enter manually enter IP address and log in. The question is why is that ? Why am I unable to access DHCP ?

I am unable to ping 192.168.1.1 on Ubuntu.

@ashwin_d123 some modems default IP address is 192.168.2.1 have you tried that one? Also in previous post screenshot by gambit the "method" dropdown, is yours showing "Automatic" instead of "Manual"? Automatic is what should enabled DHCP client on your OS and yes once you login to the modem web admin console the DHCP server there should also be enabled.

Vishal rao - thanks for your post. It was showing automatic. I changed it to manual. And then entered static IP address and now I can connect to internet.

Sorry but 192.168.2.1 does not work either.

I haven't been tracking this thread fully, but can you update what is current router model you are using and what is the current issue(s) you are facing?

Did you try hard-reset of your router (pressing a small reset button or pin in hole below or behind the device) to bring it back to factory default settings, then look online for the default IP address and username/password so you can configure it again?
