Can unofficial stbs be used for big tv?

I have a Philips LCD TV with Digital Tuner. It has a smartcard slot also. So, if I insert the bigtv card into the slot and the cable to the input slot in the tv, will I be able to watch Big Tv? I am asking this question for the sole reason that Tata Sky can not be watched on other stbs.

A basic question- I guess there are different types of digital tuners, for terrestrial it is DVB-T, while for satellite it is DVB-S. Which one is your's? or does it support both?

Well, it is DVB-T. I have a converter which will convert the satellite cable to terrestrial cable (i.e. the pin head of the sat cable to the thick head of the terrestrial cable)

I am not really qualified to advise you on this, but let me share my gut feelings for all I know
CAM in stbs is meant for interoperability among various DTH providers, so that one can use any stb and insert whatever card they want to (just like mobile handsets and sim cards). However, that doesn't seem to be the case with current DTH services in India. I have never heard of anybody using other stbs for tata-sky or dish-tv, like the ones made by India's best technology for DTH terminals from MCBS or other (Chinese) boxes readily available here. Once I had inquired about such stb's, but all of them claimed that they can support only FTA channels, not paid ones. Apart from compatibility with CAM modules, tata-sky and dish-tv may have other customizations in their stbs as well (like all "active" frills).

I guess Reliance will also follow the same, and support for mpeg4 will be a necessity (of course!)

BTW, DVB-S and DVB-T have more fundamental differences other than just thin versus thick cable heads. So, the converter that you mentioned might be having some circuit inside as well, I guess. Is it so?

i don;t think the tuner that comes with the lcd does not work at all, it is designed for cable DVB access not sure of type of encryption

Santosh and Krazy,Thanks very much for the clarifications. Now I don't think I would like to try that experiment (or would I?). I really can't decide.99% chances are that it won't work, but I'm hoping for the 1% :redface:
