CDOT: CDoT to develop registry of lost, stolen phones to prevent misuse - The Economic Times

The Central Equipment Identify Register (CEIR) will allow telecom carriers to share information on lost devices so as to prevent them from getting reactivated with a new SIM on a different network. This is expected to help consumers safeguard private data on lost mobile phones and other devices.

BSNL's IT Project Cell in Maharashtra was to start a pilot programme on CEIR in July last year, but it never took off.

"The decision to implement CEIR through IPTC, BSNL has been reviewed and revised. Now it has been decided to entrust the work of research, design, development and installation of CEIR system to CDoT," the telecom department said in a note, dated January 31.

DoT: DoT likely to start tracking system for lost mobiles next month

The Department of Telecom (DoT) had assigned the mobile phone tracking project "Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR)" aimed at bringing down counterfeit cellphones and discouraging theft to C-DoT in July 2017.

The government has proposed to allocate Rs 15 crore for setting up CEIR in the country that will bring down the number of counterfeit handsets and discourage theft.

The CEIR system will block all services on stolen or lost mobile phones on any network even if the SIM card is removed or IMEI number of the handset is changed.

The system is also expected to protect consumer interest and facilitate law enforcement authorities for lawful interception.
