So I am not going to go through the thread. What I think about the whole project? ISRO is doing amazing work. They had a minor debacle in this project. They would get back on it. And they would get it right in a few years. That’s what they do. That’s what they have always done. What I do not like is the immense drama that was created for yesterday’s event. There was always a chance that it would fail. There was no point in creating so much hoopla before the success. PM should have stayed away. Monitored the event from his home/office. Standing right inside ISRO creates unnecessary pressure on the people working there. This was not needed. Media should also have maintained a good distance. I did not see the event live. I just heard the updates on twitter. I did not see the much talked about hug and crying. I just read about it. I saw images of news anchors doing media events with moon imagery cgi imposed in background. Some news anchors were wearing pretend spacesuits made up of silver foiled covered clothing like ISRO was landing a man on the moon. All this literally made me want to mute ISRO related terms on social media. They really should leave ISRO alone to do their job as they have done for so long. Provide them with all the support they need. At the very least do not cut their salaries.
visuals like these is what bothers me. he would never go visit a poor farmer's family who killed himself because he could not pay his loan. he would never visit a family who lost a member of the family due to demonetization or botched up implementation of gst. he would not visit a family who lost a family member because of aadhaar imposition. he would not visit a family who lost their home to fire because they could not call fire brigade in kashmir as all communication lines are dead. his isro visit clearly did not plan out as he would have wished. i believe he was to hold an address to nation at 8am which he cancelled. he still ended up taking out political mileage out of the event with this hug surrounded with cameras. you might call me an asshole for saying this but this is how it is.
I think orbiter need to be in a different orbit to take visual images which would take time. There was something in news that lander can communicate with orbiter but nothing from isro official.
About media honestly I have no idea if there was unusual hype in media or modi was going there nor I care about any of that. I was following this mainly on reddit from August and isro live stream on youtube was scheduled 3-4 days ago so I just turned on reminder for live stream.
you should have seen the kind of hashtags that were running on twitter. people were treating it as if we had already landed and planted our flag on the moon. they created way too much hype for this event that had a very high probability of failure. i mean just look at spacex launches. they downplay it so much talking about risks and all that and the final result is always spectacular because you are always impressed with the success. this is how space launches should be treated with. caution. you only celebrate when you succeed. but you always support the people behind the projects.
and do not even get me started on how they keep on talking about how cheap our space program is. when you do not pay your people well. when you make them beg for resources... when you are a country with limited resources... of course you are not going to spend as much as nasa. it's not like nasa likes to waste the limited resources they have. they are also massively underfunded and they just like isro make do with what they get from the government.
