Friends,

Hello to all members of this wonderful forum! :)

I got my Dataone connection last week (Home 500 plan). Am using Win XP on my PC.

The actual installation happened when i was away from home. So, i have a small doubt.

The modem/router allotted to me is a Starcom UT300R2U. I use an Ethernet-card based LAN connectivity mode. The technician who completed the installation has configured a 'dialer' based PPPoE connectivity setup - meaning, it is not an 'always-on' setup, but i have to physically click on the dialer icon (after switching on my comp and my modem/router), and then wait for it to establish connection.

Now, the problem is: i'm at times not able to establish connectivity at the first or second attempt, but it takes at least 5-6 attempts.

I know that i can at least try to resolve this problem to a certain extent by enabling the 'Always On' mode instead of 'Dial-up' mode. But when i try to open the modem/router config page (192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.1), it simply doesn't open up!.

And yes, i am running Win XP, so there's no patching issue here(which is there for Win 98, ME users), and yes, by default, the suggested 'Obtain IP adress and DNS automatically' option is on.

So, I would like to know how i can reach my modem's configuration page, given the fact that my settings are as described, and i have tried to open it on multiple browsers, after clearing cookies and adopting all other standard procedures. Please also let me know your suggestions on how to change mode after reaching the modem page, and if that should solve my connectivity issue.

Would also like to know from all knowledgeable fellow-members which mode is best suited for use, dial-up ethernet or always on ethernet. I dont have a firewall, but i do have a good antivirus, and since i need to use a P2P program occasionally, i'm wary of using a firewall.

Thanks in advance!

the connectivity issues u are facing are probably due to the screw up in the bangalore exchange that happened sometime back.. things are better.. but still not the best... i suggest using the dialer mode.. for the followin reasons1. u don need to portforward to get good speeds on torrents.2. if u leave ur comp overnight for downloads.. u can use the dial a connection function that way.. u wont be charged as if the downloads were done before 2...3. if ur modem gets hacked into... they wont be able to see the username or get the pass..4. because i say so..as for the modem page.. try opening it in someone elses comp and see if the problem is the same.. if it is.. get it replaced.. otherwise.. i have no clue!

No, i don't think it's because of the Bangalore screw-up, as my connection was enabled on a Friday after the B'Lore issue was sorted out..

2. if u leave ur comp overnight for downloads.. u can use the dial a connection function that way.. u wont be charged as if the downloads were done before 2...

Eh? I don't understand you!

Correct me if i am wrong - but how does the dial-up mode matter here?? I thought that it doesn't matter when you start your download, but only how much MB you download during normal hours and free hours - for example, if i start a download at 1 am, even if it's free from 2 am, i still have to pay for that several MB/GB's that i downloaded between 1 and 2... only those bytes after 2 am are left uncharged... pls be more clear. As it stands, i think there's no way of downloading more during normal hours without having to shell out the money for it.

if ur modem gets hacked into... they wont be able to see the username or get the pass..

Can you explain what difference it makes or how someone who 'hacks' into my modem can't see my UID/Pwd if i'm in dial-up mode? On the contrary, i think always-on mode, where you don't have to specify UID/Pwd is more safer.

because i say so..

I'd love to take it at that, my dear friend, but, :P, that alone isn't assurance enough for now! hehehe..:)

as for the modem page.. try opening it in someone elses comp and see if the problem is the same.. if it is.. get it replaced.. otherwise.. i have no clue!

I'll try this, but i somehow feel this isn't the issue... still, it's definitely worth a try...

almost all datone users having this connectvity problems from june 1st wk, if i'm correct.still now n then it appearsmy friend works on always on mode,he has connectivity problemstoou only told u dont hac firewall,so u cant control which program is intended to access internet from ur pc.if ur always on mode,it eats up bytes, for say if u ran out of mbs in month ending,u wanna download only in unlimited hrs, always on mode will creat a prob,i guess u got iteven though u can switch off modem..!!!

no.. the connectivity issues have still not been sorted out completely... ever once a while i have issues connecting..let me explain the overnight downloads.. there are ppl who have scheduled downloads at 2:30am onwards, but since they are in the always connect mode, their modem stays on before 2.. so.. what happens is even though the download has been started at 2:30, in the dataone portal, abt 100mb is said to be downloaded before 2am.. with the dial up option, u can configure a software to dial up the connection and avoid that issue (or.. u could get up at 2:30 and manually switch on the modem)...as for the hacking part, if someone can hack into ur modem, then he can go to the wan settings and see the username and probably if he's any good.. he can even crack the password.. when in dial up mode.. the username and password is not present in the modem but inside ur comp.. n.. hacking into a comp is a bit harder compared to hacking into the modem.. so.. ur safer that way..i have a friend who's modem page doesn't open in his comp.. it seems to work fine in others comps.. its a weird problem..hope i've cleared a few things.. feel free to ask me more so that i can show off with my miniscule knowledge and pass of as a comp guru here :P
