Hi,I am running a cat 5e cable from my friends' apartment (same floor) around 20 Meters to share a Airtel Broadband connection. The cable is running from His 220Bx Directly ( no switches / routers / hubs / wifi etc)we use the connection alternatively. After we agreed to this, I bought cable and connect my pc to his modem (around 20 meters far), "Lan shows connected!"I configure my Network connectivity settings same as his, but I am not able to browse. but i switch the cable to his pc, everything works fine.I think some basic problem, Please HelpThanks in Advance~GOP

Well assuming you are running XP, for starters open Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connections. Once there, right click ur LAN connection icon and select Properties. Then select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)>Properties. Make sure that both 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS servers automatically' are ticked. If that doesn't work, open the same friend's PC and copy them onto urs. Btw, you and ur friend need not alternate using the net. Just get a switch/hub or a router with multiple lan ports and u can both use it simultaneously.

Thanks for the reply Waterloo,I did the following things before i posted this message:As You mentioned, I already tried configuring my Network Connection to automatically detect settings, it did not work. Then I copied my friends settings, and I configured the same on my pc (including the IP Address)Double checked it... the settings are the same, yet some problem still exists. My Observations in my friends PC is:Whenever I connect the Lan Cable to 220BX, immediately a second Network Connection appears named "Internet Connection" apart from the LAN Connection, which does not happen in Mine.My friend works for a Call Center at Night, so he uses the Internet in the Day, while I return back from my work in the evening, I would like to just check my personal mail; we both are not interested in torrents or any other things.. just check the mails at the end of the day.We prefer to buy a switch / router when he get a daytime job.Hope my observation gives you a clue of where the problem lies...Thanks,Gop.

Seems like the modem is configured in bridge mode or dial on demand. Go to ur friends PC, open http://192.168.1.1/main.html in a web browser, click on Advanced Setup>WAN>Edit ...skip the first page, on the 2nd page, make sure PPPoE and LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING are selected, on the next page all boxes should be unticked, 4th page...NAT and WAN service should be enabled. Save/Reboot. After the modem reboots, select Advanced Setup>LAN ...DHCP should be enabled, start and end ip's should be 192.168.1.2/254 ...save/reboot. Now connect the LAN cable to ur PC, configure ur Network Connection to automatically detect settings and see if get connected.

Thanks for your detailed Explination.
It started working now..... :cool2:

Just in case if we needed to work simultaneously,
Would you advice to to go for a Router / Switch??

if router, why not switch and if switch why not router?

Thanks,
Gop.

Router will cost more will it'll serve both as a modem and switch, so less wiring/cables, lesser hassle. Switch will be cheaper though. But first, you should call Airtel Nodal (refer to ur bill for phone no.), and ask if they can provide you a router for free since you have more than one computer and a modem won't suffice. Be polite and persuasive Don't tell them you and ur friend are sharing the connection though. :pIf they don't budge, my advice is to get a Linksys Wifi Router while ur at it . It has 4 lan ports and one of you is bound to purchase a laptop in the near future and the wifi will come in handy then. Or you could get a wireless card for ur pc now along with the router and do away with the 20m cable altogether.

Thanks for the great advice. Thanks again to the admins who are running this group.will get a switch for now.... may be i could go in for a router in future.Thanks,~Gop.
