Thank you for your reply.
My modem is UT-300R2U
I am connecting by PPPoE

The configuration page looks somewhat different, the configuration is handled
by wizard, and in the final step I have to enter User ID and Pw.

Should this be the format of the userID with no space or underscore anywhere?:
username123(std code)456789(telephone no)@bsnl.in

Thank you.

Which modem you use now? give make/number.
Check what is entered in the WAN page.

my ID for bsnl 117.xx.xx.xx is
EXAMPLE ONLY (not real) [email protected]
Chennai circle. could be different for you.

If you have set your 300R2U to PPPoE, then there is no need to enter your authentication credentials again in the DIR-300.
Just use it as a switch and a wireless access point...

follow this procedure...

Set your "Network Card" to obtain "IP address automatically". Connect DIR-300 ethernet port 1 to your PC using a RJ-45 cable...

But before that, reset your DIR-300 to factory default by "pressing and holding" the reset button at the back with a match stick for about 30 seconds...

1. Setup ---> Manual Internet connection Setup ---> uncheck Enable access point mode, My Internet connection is: Dynamic IP, Host Name: DIR-300, MTU: 1492 if you are in a big city or 1432 if in a small town. Save settings...

2. Wireless Setup ---> Manual Wireless Setup ---> setup as per your choice by giving a unique SSID and security protocols. save settings...

3. LAN Setup ---> leave all default values, check Enable DNS Relay, check Enable DHCP Server. save settings...

4. Finally "Reboot"

5. Now connect the RJ-45 cable from your 300R2U modem to the "Internet" port on the DIR-300 and your PC to any one of the other 4 ethernet ports...

You should be up & running after this.... Happy surfing...

The root of the problem seems to be having the correct user ID. When I visited the BSNL office a a couple of days ago, the technocrat there glibly insisted the user ID is simply [email protected]. That of course hasn't worked. So I'm now trying another line of enquiry through an 'insider' (as you have to do in India!) to get the correct User ID. He has promised to make some enquiries on Monday; let's see if I get anywhere with that.
Thank you.

I have finally managed to configure my wi-fi! I dispensed with the wizard cd - i set modem to pppoe on the modem site and converted the wi-fi router to a wi-fi switch on the wifi router site. There is no need to input user id/user account to configure the wi-fi router. So wi-fi is working fine now. The next issue is securing my wi-fi connection. For WPA wireless security mode, the manual configuration requires inputinga network key. However when I go through the process, and the wifi router reboots, and I try to get on wifi, it does not connect nor asks for network key. In wizard configuration, the generated security key is not displayed nor am I asked for it when I try to connect by wifi. What am I missing here?
