Hey everyone,

I’ve been struggling with a frustrating internet issue, and I’m hoping someone here can shed some light on what’s happening.

I use Hathway as my ISP, and every 24 hours, like clockwork, my internet goes down for a few seconds to a few minutes. When this happens, the net light on my ONT (Optical Network Terminal) turns off, and when it comes back, my public IP has changed. This has been happening every single day since I got the connection back in October last year.

I've reported this issue multiple times, and my ISP has replaced my modem 3-4 times already. They insist that everything is fine on their backend, but clearly, something is wrong.

A few key points:
  • The disconnection happens exactly every 24 hours.
  • It lasts anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.
  • My public IP changes after each disconnect.
  • My ISP keeps saying their side is fine, but I keep experiencing this issue daily.
I don’t know much about networking, so I’d really appreciate any insights into what could be causing this. Is this normal behavior for a dynamic IP setup, or is there something faulty in my equipment/setup?

Thanks in advance for any help, and I truly appreciate your time and expertise!

Yeah, that’s what I’m starting to suspect too. But the fact that it completely kills my connection for a couple of minutes every 24 hours is beyond frustrating. It’s messing up important work, disconnecting calls, and interrupting downloads. I can’t believe this is considered ‘normal.’

Do you think I should ask my ISP to change something? Any workaround or fix to stop this from happening?

I totally get what you’re saying, but switching ISPs isn’t that simple for me. The local ISPs here aren’t great—they use CG-NAT, so no true public IP. I looked into this a bit, though I don’t know all the technical specifics.

I previously tried Wishnet, and their connection was a nightmare—dropping every hour or so. In that regard, Hathway has been stable, except for this frustrating 24-hour forced disconnection due to the dynamic IP change, which isn’t ideal at all.

As for the bigger ISPs, Airtel and Jio only offer AirFiber here, not actual fiber. I even spoke at length with a local Jio representative, and while he was helpful, he told me that the existing local ISPs (Alliance, Wishnet, and especially Hathway) have blocked Jio from expanding their fiber network here. I found that really surprising, but I have no idea what to do from this point.

Thanks again to everyone for your insights! Do you guys have any suggestions on how I should proceed?

There is no way Hathway tech support will actually fix this issue. If you really need guaranteed uptime you will have to pay a lot and get a leased line. Even normal business conections of Airtel and Jio will not provide SLA so you will not get guaranteed uptime. And normal Airtel and Jio connections are also CG-NAT. With Airtel you can pay for static IP but with Jio to get static ip you will need atleast basic business plan which needs GST registration and stuff.

You can try asking the local ISP for public IP address (just ask static IP) if you really need it. They might be willing to provide static ip if you are willing to pay. Most probably you will be fine with just CG-NAT though.

I once had this kind of issue, with my previous isp, Although not Daily but around 2-3 time's week. After checking the logs on the ONT, it shows the PON gets Lost for 2min. After contacting the ISP, they told me it was due to the ONU(or olt I forgot) having a scheduled reboot (don't know why they did that).

You can get Airtel Airfiber/Other local ISP as a backup connection when hathway goes down. Go for their base speed plan.

Yeah, I figured Hathway tech support won’t be of much help with this. A leased line is way out of my budget, and if even Airtel and Jio business connections don’t guarantee uptime, then that’s not really an option either.

I didn’t know that Jio requires a business plan with GST registration for a static IP—that’s good to know. As for Airtel, paying for a static IP could be an option, but unfortunately, they only offer AirFiber here, not proper fiber.

I could try asking the local ISPs for a static IP, but honestly, their network quality worries me. Do you think paying for a static IP from them would actually help, or would I just be throwing money at another unstable connection?

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it!

That’s interesting! In my case, the PON light on my ONT never goes off—it stays on the whole time. What actually happens is that the Internet light turns off every 24 hours, then comes back within about 5 minutes. When it does, my public IP has changed.

So it doesn’t seem like a PON loss issue, but more like something related to how they handle dynamic IP assignments. Still, I have no idea why it needs to fully disconnect like this instead of just renewing the IP seamlessly.

Did your ISP ever offer any fix or workaround for your issue?
