I usually would not have considered buying one locally but I cannot seem to find any friend who is coming back from states.

I need to get one before Aug 28th and well my options are pretty limited.

I checked out models on various online stores and well could not make up my mind.

All the decent models are priced in the range of 8-10K which I think is an absurd price for the value they offer.

I am asking for your suggestions. If anyone has bought any specific model that they consider is extremely good value for money.

Please help!

An older thread on the forum is pretty useless right now :) https://broadband.forum/consumer-electronics-and-hardware/49497-digital-photo-frame/

Like you said, options in India are pretty limited. I myself got mine from the US, however, of late I have noticed that Transcend's 8 inchers are reasonably priced compared to the other options in the market. In addition, Croma seems to have their inhouse brand which has sub 8" models at low prices.

You can check the full range of Transcend here, though it would be cheaper buying the same stuff in the grey market or even on eBay with one of their discount coupons - that would bring the price another 500 bucks.

You can also use shopyourworld.com and select 'receive as gift' so you don't have to pay duties. This is the quote I saw for the Coby DP862 ($61.17 on Amazon.com)

Pretty good deal IMO considering the shipping and SYW vendor fees are included in it.

The problem with the cheap ones is that they are neither from any brand nor do they carry any kinda warranty. While electronics rarely fail, it is the display that is the vital part here.

Its a tradeoff between the money you save and the probability of the thing conking off . Seeing the (low) number of local chinese electronics I have seen failing , i'd say its a pretty good bet . and BTW companies like COBY just get these cheap frames manufactured and put their own branding on it and sell it for a premium on Amazon and the likes . Nationite does the same thing

i guess i would get one of the models from transcend! thanks for the information guys.

ok discussed with a friend who works in a computer magazine.

he suggested going for a chinese model because the branded ones are more likely to be same products with the brand logo. :D

anyways. he also suggested trying to get a model that has folder based navigation. the ability to find and check out an individual image.

he said to check out ezone instead of regular stores because they are more likely to offer these devices at decent prices (instead of the MRP which is of course going to be whole lot more).

it is a common fact that most consumer electronics are generally sold at prices below the MRP posted on them (printers, processors, motherboards etc).

i would check out my hardware guy if he can get me some quotes. and i would check out ezone in gurgaon on what they have to offer. we do have a croma in gurgaon. i remember seeing it in one of the malls. would check that out too.

i do not want to go to reliance digital as they are the worst of the lot.

we also have Jumbo here in gurgaon. would also check out that place.

preferring to avoid an online store this time around. i do not want the shit to get delayed (cafegadgets took 10 days to deliver a mousepad!)

alright here is some research in the local market...

ezone in gurgaon. had no devices in stock. could not tell me when they would have any.

went to Sony showroom. had one model on display. terrible picture quality. DPF-A73 : Digital Photo Frame : Digital Photography : Sony India

DPF-X95 : Digital Photo Frame : Digital Photography : Sony India is the other model on offer from the company. they did not have it in stock. not on display as well. this one is supposed to have a much better display.

both the models were quoted at MRP (6000 and 12000). HAHA.

checked out another store. they have a moser baer model on display. 4K. the unit was not working because the adapter was dead. so could not check it out.

had two Philips models. but i doubt they were digital photo frames in the first place! one had a DVD player inside it. the other one was a multi function device with an alarm clock and FM radio. both were 10K.

checked out philips website. found this model: Philips - Digital PhotoFrame 7" 16:9 frame ratio - SPF1017/10 - Digital PhotoFrames - Digital photo - Sound and vision MRP is 5000.

a friend is a dealer of Denso and JBL products. asked him to find the price he could get me. since he would be able to get me the dealer pricing, i expect it to cost less.

if i can get it for between 4-4.5K, i might purchase it (without even checking it out!). i do not think it's display is going to be any better than the Sony's 6000 rupee model. but i guess 4500 for this is better than spending 3500 on an unbranded unit.

and if i cannot get a decent price, i would probably drop the idea of buying one.
