Good news for all Dishtv subscribers, as Dishtv is planning to roll out HD Ready STB's which are 25-30% more economical as compared with Sun Direct.

Dish TV to roll out STBs that are HD-ready

Direct-to-home (DTH) service provider Dish TV plans to launch high definition (HD) ready set-top boxes (STBs) in the next 3 months. Its price is expected to be 25-30 per cent less than the comparable offering of its competition, Sun Direct, according to Salil Kapoor, COO of Dish TV.

Sun’s HDTV service installation and first-year subscription costs about Rs 9,500 and there’s no special charge for the new set-top box. DTH subscribers, instead, will pay Rs 2,500 for a year’s subscription to Sun DTH.

HDTV is considered as one of the world’s best digital broadcast platforms, with a higher resolution than the traditional television system. The images and pictures appear more clear and sharp and sound quality is also enhanced. HDTV is expected to improve the viewer experience by about 5 times over a regular television.

“HDTV programmes have better video and audio quality than conventional digital TV broadcast. We hope to accelerate our subscriber base with the launch of HDTV set-top boxes,” says Kapoor. Existing Dish TV users will be required to upgrade their STBs and have high definition LCD TVs to avail to this service. The company claims to have over 6.6 million subscribers.

Dish TV estimates that about 1 million television sets are HD-ready. “India records LCD TV sales at about 3 million units a year, of which more than 30 per cent id HD ready,” estimated Kapoor.

Once HD becomes trend, prices would surely come down.SKY UK has even started giving HD STB for free!BTW 'HD Ready' STB means? only STB would be HD ready? but DISH TV may not start HD service sooner?

I wouldn't read between the lines. Hopefully they don't intend to show regular stuff on the HD 'ready' STB. If they however mean just that, it would be appalling on their part.

I think Surely they will Start Showing HD Content also.Further Its really good to see that prices are quite lesser and i hope now HD becomes more affordable. Further its great to see content in HD, Specially the Sporting events with great picture and audio quality will bring life and worth watching specially the upcoming events like common wealth games.
