I have home 500 BSNL plan at home. My modem is ut300r2u. I have set my settings to bridge mode. Even though my download speed quite ok(around 200 KB/ps), the browsing speed is not good. Sometimes connectivity just stops, sometimes sites like google dosn't open etc. at this time, if try to access the modem page(192.1.1.1) it doesn't open. But most of the times, I have solved this by again switching off and switching on the modem. Why is it so? In my office I have MTNL connection and even though the download speed is very low(around 56KB/ps), the browsing speeds is lightning fast. why?

Is this a recent issue? Or more long term in nature?

Otherwise:

[*] Get the Microsoft malware removal tool as well as Spybot search and destroy. Run them. Also get some anti virus like AVG and run it after updating to latest definitions. Do a thorough / "full system" scan with all these software ASAP.

[*] Go to Start>>Run and type "msconfig" sans quotes. Hit enter. In the 'Startup' tab see what programs and services are starting automatically. Disable the ones that you do not want.

[*] How have you set up filtering and firewall in the ADSL modem?

[*] Reset the modem per instructions in manual and configure a new connection in PPPoE mode and see if it makes any difference in speed/latency. For me Bridge mode doesn't really work (connection keeps dropping) so I have to use PPPoE. :|

Try these steps and let us know how things work out for you.

Check out the cache, free disk space and space allocated for temp. internet files, etc.there are a lot of factors contributing to slowing fo browser speed.when u r getting good speed while downloading i guess the problem is not with ur connection but ur PC.

@sankalpit It is of recent origin. Intenet is not connected via usb. Mine is through ethernet. Your expression" connection keeps dropping" that exactly is my problem. Mine is at present configured in bridge mode. I have not even put the ips of DNS servers. So according to you, if change it PPPOE, will it work. Will I be able to download torrents? There is no malware/virus. I have norton antivirus. I have no firewall either at the modem level or at the level of windows. I didn't do it because for each and every programme, we will get popus. Now I will configure my modem in PPPOE and let you know. Thanks to all of you for writing in.

Hello sir,

If the problem is recent don't change anything. Many people suffered this issue past few days, but now it has been resolved. Are you still having trouble? Change settings only if the problem is presisting.

You get popups only from software programs that act as firewall. And perhaps windows firewall (which I have disabled).

Your ADSL modem firewall settings are a bit different and would not present popups. So enable ADSL firewall, other than DDoS protection (which can slow torrents or some P2P programs that send a lot of packets your way).

Something like this:

It is good that you have anti-virus. But I don't know its effectiveness in dealing with latest malware/adware so can't comment.

DNS won't affect connection stability. Although some would recommend that you put the openDNS addresses in ADSL modem. Like this:

Since you do not run firewalls, I would strongly recommend that you run the world famous GRC Shields-up test. Run the test while torrent program is off/not running. In particular, check the three highlighted things:
