drainage works cut bsnl adsl cables , exchange telling to convert to ftth fiber ! telling no chance of adsl again in this area .help !

i reside in chennai , drainage works cut cables at several places making it imspossible to join them here and there, line man says they messed up the main line , and they keep digging the whole street . now the exchange people telling they got order to convert the lines in our area or the damaged area to fiber , now as it will have the touch of local cable operator which i am not sure how the attitude will be of them when a fault occurs , or when i need them .
anyway the the diference in bill would be 100 rs if i go for fiber now from what i been paying . i dont mind for that part much now , its just about the modem and cost and attitude of the 3rd party touch to my service is bothering me .
please guide me if any possible way to keep hold on to my adsl
or i could be ready with a cheap wired GPON (huwaii many have said that in forums) which would be supportive to ftth in very soon near future and about lte i am not sure what holds in with the cable operator .is there any modem which could support whatever the lte the cable operator 3r party would have ? thank you
 
There is no way going back to ADSL. You may wait for Jio AirFiber that is expected to launch next week. How about your usage? How many GBs do you consume per month or per day with ADSL?

There is no FTTH modem / router that works with every operator (BSNL / Airtel / Jio).

Why do you want to use your own GPON modem / router? Does BSNL / LCO ask a huge fee for the modem / router?
 
thank you for replying , mostly everyday i might just use 1-3 gb of intenret, per month it can be 180-200 gb (200gb cul plan)which was perfect with my adsl i have now(but dead at present) . yes i dont trust the lco for now , nor have the idea how much the lco would be asking(the exchange staff himself once said the lco here is little problematic, i dont know what he meant , the exchange je or ae very well knows i dont give a dime extra ,i am very straight forward ,he was little upset about that, also some where i heard few lco's asks for extra money for wires and modems etc so i dont want to have a rough start ,so i wanted to be ready , also i dont want to have wireless in that modem they would be giving .
by the way my lineman often says it just will charge some 1000 rs for modem , everything else is same ,change to fiber , he repeats this everytime he comes to service the line.
while searcihng for some modems i came across some modems having rj11 telephone wire port, it could be useful to me as i have one instrument with me for adsl .
for my area its mostly only bsnl available for now , i doubt if airtel or jio will reach me .
so these are things running in my mind for now , please input more about my situation , thank you.
 
It is normal for a LCO to ask money for modem and installing fiber as they can't reimburse it through any other way. LCO gets a revenue from the bill. So, it is normal for them to ask money for modem and the actual fiber. This is not a bribe to get the connection. I paid a larger amount when I got the connection about 5 years ago. I no longer use it though, as I moved to another place.

Since your usage is around 3gb per day, I wouldn't recommend LTE based options.

Jio AirFiber might work for you as it is likely to come with a much higher usage limit. You may wait till next week before deciding about the options available to you
 
thank you pothi , yes i dont like to pay bribe or anything extra which is not mentioned in plan , this is like some hidden charge which bsnl should acknowledge and meet it for me ,ofcourse which i will tweet if they ask me anything at last if that comes to that point. may be i can get the modem from out .
ohw that jio air is 6000 rs oops , not gona take it likewise for airtel .
 
If you get good jio 4g/5g network then try jio 599 unlimited plan.
 
nope jio signal isnt good at my place , now airtel even getting nothing ,no signal at all, the sim is just a year old . the only cheap and good was bsnl for me until this diggin happen . i hate a 3rd party telling me to not to have my own instruments or anything or denying any tuning in future in need ,thats why seeing a way to avoid that guys .to keep adsl as long as possible but looks like they got a order to convert these adsl ruptured lines to fiber , the je or ae telling right away that i wont be getting adsl anymore , atleast they can tell it will take time,looks like they aint ready to fix those lines , how can they do this ! its not like bsnl is shutting down adsl officially ! i understnad its a heavy work fixing all those lines, but instead telling it will take time , they right away say switch to fiber , adsl wont be available , its not there authority to say this i believe even if given the right reasons for the time period. just a rant , i never had good times with private jerks . for eg airtel .
 
I was using ADSL too before moving to FTTH just a few days before COVID lockdown. There were a few local FTTH services before but the prices were a little too much. I had ADSL wire break issue quite frequently because the connection was from a pole across the street. Then the road was redone with new water pipes for the entire area and old underground phone lines were damaged beyond repair. The lineman still tried to make things work by connecting the wires over poles but it had too much noise to be useful.

Now, FTTH is much better than ADSL. You get higher data transfer speed. But ONU/ONT (fiber modems) have to be compatible or authenticated with OLTs, the other end of ONT in a PON (Passive Optical Network). You can ask the LCO to install a basic ONT with gigabit ethernet port and a phone port and then get your own router and bridge the connection. Initiate talks with LCO and see where it leads.
 
thank you sloj , i am in exact same position as you were , i read there are some modems which are EPON GPON both in it , so it will work with any lco ,, so is it true ?, i really dont want to spend too much on ffth modem ,anything less than 1000rs would be good bet , ready to buy used ones too, looking for in olx etc.. and also i plan to wait till any good offers to come such as free installation ( if its still there, i am not aware ) , so what else i would need to be paying if its a free installation , when i have the modem and also my own router. thanks for the support and guidance all of you .
