DSL modem problem: Switching between LAN & USB

hi all,i have huwai smartax mt 882 modem. the modem was working perfectly fine, but somehow now when i switch on the modem the lights keep switching from LAN to USB. i have LAN cable connected to the modem. the internet doesn't connect. The exact scenario is when i switch on the modem, it starts as normal and there is an orange light on LAN. after few secs, normally the LINK light should flicker before connecting, but it doesn't flicker, instead it turns on orange and the light from LAN goes off and USB light is turned on. this cycle continues for minutes and now for hours.sometimes it connects after hours of keeping the modem on. don't know what is the problem. i also did modem reset but the main problem is it keeps switching from LAN to USB.another thing is my ip address shows 169.xxx.xxx.xx. i know at it is not a valid ip address. i have windows 7. i have kept everything on auto configuration.please help me outregards
