//// installing an add-on device called a transcoder to their set-top boxes. ...///What is this? Can anyone clarify to us? Is this again proprietory? If this is so simple, Can this be done by the consumers? What is the hitch here?

this device would have to be connected to ur STB and so u can use any other operator service but if u use TS and DISH TV u cant use MPEG-4 based operators service

/// his device would have to be connected to ur STB and so u can use any other operator service ////Thanks, ayan. Can this device be fixed by users independently? Or, This should be fixed only by DTH operators. Can this enable the set-top-box to automatically get any signal? How does it work in practice? Thanks for your clarifications.

the above reply by ayan is totally incorrect as of my knowledge.

Transcoder is a device that converts Mpeg4 stream / signal to Mpeg2 for the legacy Set-Top-Boxes such as Tatasky and Dish TV to decode the Stream / Signals.

The Transcoder device is installed in Tatasky or Dish for the very purpose of converting Mpeg4 based DTH provider's signals it self.

We don't have to install any Transcoder module for watching Dish TV or Tatasky DTH.

But people are just concerned about the Broadcast format as interoperability barrier.

Encryption compatibility is also a widely overlooked barrier.

i dont see how an external device can solve the problem. the cards are to be read by the STB. which are locked by the carriers. how can a third party device can enable the STB to read the card that is inserted in the box? someone has to explain it to me!

"DTH operators like Dish TV and Tata Sky have said that they are inter-operable in line with the DTH licensing norms. “We are in full compliance of the DTH licensing conditions as far as operability of MPEG 2 boxes go,” said Anshuman Sharma, chief legal and regulatory affairs officer, Tata Sky."

Is this facility of moving over frm TS to dish or frm Dish to TS currently available without changing the STB as to the compliance of the DTH licensing conditions by TRAI

Great now that they have admitted, TRAI shud take this opportunity and ask Tata Sky DTH and DishTV to post a USER GUIDE with clear instruction on how to do that.
