New Delhi: The Government today denied the charges that in view of non-control over pricing of DTH channels, the existing service providers are charging exorbitant prices for the service.

In reply to a Rajya Sabha question, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Anand Sharma, stated that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had informed that a comparison of entry level package prices of a few DTH operators with CAS offerings reveals that DTH pricing in the country are not exorbitant.

Citing an example of Dish TV, the Minister pointed out that their entry-level package offering 110 channels and services, is priced at Rs 99 plus taxes. While the premium package of the same operator, offering 165 channels and services, is priced at Rs 275 plus taxes.

"Compared to these prices, a subscriber under the CAS regime pays a minimum of Rs 82 excluding taxes and Rs 5.35 for each Pay channel that the subscriber seeks to subscribe. In view of the above, the price offering in case of DTH services vis-a-vis CAS is not a wide variance," stated Sharma.

the government in our country sucks. trai has a decent control on telecom companies. but they are doing it all wrong with dth and broadband service providers. even IPTV is overcharged (i am talking about airtel here!)

If it isn't exorbitantly priced then why is it beyond reach of common man? Huge Package cost acts as a detriment for all.

I would say DTH is not a common man's choice...........the common man's choice of DTH is DD Direct only........:thumb:

True!!

If you want free go for DD+ . If you want quality and quantity(in. no. of channels) pay through your nose. Get IPTV the best. (only availabe in Delhi NCR for now) or go for DTH

BTW the cost of one HD channel in HK ( either Nat Geo or Discovery) is $35 HK. approx. Rs 250

Can some one tell me what are advantages of a HD channel..........apart from the picture and sound quality.........

DTH is targetted towards upper middle class people. Tata Sky also promotes itself as a "premium" thing. So does Airtel. While Big TV goes for the sasta tag. I don't think Tata Sky is competing with Cablewala. It is far too premium for it.

You are true......even in digital TV if a person is interested to watch more than 40 pay channels it will surely cost him Rs. 340..........i.e.: 40 * 6 = Rs. 240 + line rental Rs. 100 which comes to Rs. 340....... Its only where CAS is not implemented the cable oeprators are charging Rs. 250 or less as they are showing the exact figures of their customers........ The problem with DTH and Digital TV is that the service providers are bound to show the exact amount of the customers who are subscribing to specific channels or boquet of channels.........where in the service providers cant cheat the broadcaster or the distributors who are providing the channels to DTH or Digital TV..........and this problem does not arises for the non cas cable oeprators as they give wrong information to the broadcaster or the distributor with respect to their customer base........
