I am facing a very peculiar problem w.r.t the home network and I'm hoping someone on this forum might be able to shed some light as to probable cause(s).
Our home is currently served by Jio Fiber and we use a Motorola mesh network indoors with one router and two satellites. We were on the 300Mbps plan for several months, always getting top download speeds, but observed that download speeds were suddenly less than 100Mbps since the past two months.
We have the dual-band Gateway with firmware version FHMTF1_JCOW403_R1.40 and a quick check via ethernet and the 5GHz channel revealed speeds were good. So the culprit seemed to be the ethernet cable itself. This was verified upon using a network cable tester, and was very surprising to me as to its sudden occurence - there was nothing that could have possibly damaged the cable.
Fast forward to this week and I routed a new CAT6 cable, tested it after crimping to ensure all was good (I used the T568B sequence) and I also tested download speeds on all segments before rewiring the entire network. I took this opportunity to switch to ethernet backhaul rather than wireless backhaul for the mesh network.
Initial tests showed the network was working fine and speeds were as expected. However, hardly an hour passed when I noticed that the Motorola router was blinking green - a sign that usually means the ethernet cable is faulty. Tested it with the network cable tester, and sure enough, #6 was dark while all other positions lit up.
I'm unable to wrap my head around how quickly a seemingly good cable went bad. I'd spent almost an entire day wiring the home, testing and double testing the connections, and ensuring there were no sharp bends on the cable. No excessive force was used on the cable and there were no visible damages to the exterior sheath.
Any thoughts? I don't have a tool that will tell me where the fault lies, so the next best option would be to simply rewire the cable from the Jio gateway into the home. Again.
