Ok, the installation is done finally! The Excitel sales people are pathetic, no sense of ownership or commitment. All they care about is getting the lead registered and customer provisioned on their side, after that they don't really bother.

As I mentioned before, on Feb 21st I was signed up on Excitel side, and on Feb 22nd Excitel sales asked me to make the payment which I made immediately (Excitel Fiber Broadband in Bangalore - User Experience? | Excitel Broadband)

After that there has been zero contact from Excitel. I followed up with them on Monday, and was told installation would happen on Tuesday ie 25th. No contact from them on Tuesday, I followed up but was given false promises. Was told that the operator is pulling the cable and is taking time, same drama on Wednesday. Then on a call with the operator, the operator said would be done the next day ie Thursday 27th.

On Thursday, to the operator's credit, they did call me on their own, but I was in a meeting and couldn't answer (it was from a new number so I wasn't really aware who it was) I called back twice, no answer. Then after 1-2 hours called again and was told they had come to check the location etc and said would come again which didn't happen.

On Friday evening finally they came to the house and checked everything and told installation would be done next day evening ie Saturday 29th. Saturday I called the operator and he said he is pulling the cable (until now no cable was pulled and the Excitel person was just lying through his teeth). Then later around 6 PM, I got messages etc saying installation is completed and received the user/pass etc, but the final work at my house wasn't really done. I called them up and they said would come after around 1 hour or so, but I wasn't available so they said would come Sunday March 1 morning ie today.

Today reached around 8:30 AM and finished the splicing etc and gave a Syrotech G/EPON ONT (SY-GPON-1000R-DONT) and told another senior technician would come for configuring the internet.

I anyway connected the device to my network, and was just exploring. I'm not sure of the VLAN id so couldn't configure.

The input power level looks great. Also, there is no bridge mode option but as @vishalrao had suggested earlier, it should work in bridge mode if you don't have a WAN connection configured. Also the port VLAN mode can be configured which is by default set to transparent.

Does Excitel usually work over PPPoE auth? Is the VLAN ID standard or does it vary? On BSNL for example the voice VLAN is always 1830 but the data VLAN varies.

@JB700 Thanks, let me try again, perhaps it didn't work earlier due to some misconfig on my end. But I did get another set of user/pass yesterday.

Ok, so I just checked and my username was indeed changed. It was earlier a 800000xxxx number and now it an alphanumeric with my name.

Doesn't seem to work. On FTTH, usually with the LCO running multiple services (TV, multiple ISPs, voice) over the same fibre link Excitel data VLAN might not be the default VLAN.

Weird, I haven't been on Excitel fiber so I didn't know about the VLANs thing. Anyways, back when I first got Excitel over ethernet, there was an issue where the router would attempt to connect and authenticate with a different PPPoE server than Excitel's. My router at the time however didn't support inputting service name as "excitel" so it kept connecting to a different server :/. Don't think it's the same thing that's happening here though.

Maybe someone else who is on Excitel fiber will be more helpful on this.

Interesting. So I called up Excitel customer care and the agent is like the connection hasn't been fully activated yet and the LCO technician should activate it before it starts working. From his perspective I get it, cause not every customer would be able to configure it themselves.

When I asked about the plan being active from yesterday, he said they'd give the necessary credit once the connection is provisioned completely.

I guess I have to wait then! :(

Ok, false alarm, it is user error on my part I guess. I just tried to setup PPPoE on the ONT and it worked out of the box without any VLAN ID as you said @JB700. I must confess I have not setup PPPoE auth on a Mikrotik device before so I might need to tweak things a bit.

Things are working and I get internet. So the Excitel support guy just tried to troll me!

Will explore things and get back with more details.

This is mega facepalm for me 🤦‍♂️, I selected the wrong interface. Excitel was connected to port 1 and I had set the PPPoE client to use port 5. 😑

Once I realised that, I deleted the WAN interface on the ONT, reset the MAC on the Excitel portal, and re-enabled the PPPoE interface and it connected right away.
