Excitel is spying on customers with their Fiber ONU (PPC Belden)

Excitel Broadband company is installing backdoor spyware hidden under the veil of their Fiber ONU.


The firmware is locked, remotely accessible (TR 069) and an unknown WiFi SSID (www.excitel.com) always remains on despite turning off WiFi in settings.

Bridge mode is intentionally disabled to monitor customers unauthorisedly.

PS : Raising the issue with their customer service has yielded no results and they are claiming that the third SSID cannot be disabled and password not shared with customer.
This is analogous to the possession of an unauthorised door-key of my residential house by the builder.

I am considering to take up the matter legally as well as with TRAI for immediate cessation of this unauthorised intrusion by Excitel.
 
so what's the actual evidence that they are spying on you? because most isps in india remotely manage their devices provided with the connection.
 
Yea Airtel, Jio etc so this as well (except for the wifi thing but I think that's more for advertisement than spying) , in fact I would argue Excitel's policy is better because their no WiFi ONU is in bridge mode by default

Airtel, Excitel and all the other ISPs keep connection logs (which ip and port you connect to) as it's required by the Govt.
 
Possession of backdoor entry itself is a circumstantial evidence and a probable security threat.

They are broadcasting a separate WiFi SSID www.excitel.com with the password available only to them. This itself is in contravention to the right to privacy.
Imagine your builder has built an additional door to your residence with the key only available to him.
How would you react to this?

PS : My concern is not about remote management (TR069). My concern is about the unauthorised WiFi SSID being broadcast and firmware locking to debar the customers from disabling the WiFi SSID.
 
ask them to give you basic onu. if they can't, disconnect. otherwise of course, go ahead with whatever you are planning to do. 👍

www.excitel.com password is supposed to be 11223344. and internet is disabled on this ssid to the best of my knowledge. it is only used as a mode of advertisement. and i have seen many members mentioning that they do allow this to be disabled these days. maybe on newer ONUs.
 
In that case, don't you think Excitel should clarify on that?

This post is just to make the users aware (and possibly to take digital privacy more seriously)
 
nothing you mention is a new behavior. it's one thing to inform users and it's completely different thing to make stupid claims like excitel is spying on customers. i mean sure. isps are indeed spying on consumers. they are required by law to keep certain logs of user activity on their platform. so there's that.
