Facebook starts another campaign against network neutrality to get support for Free Basics

you get basic access to the internet which means access to select partner sites that joins the program. rival companies are unlikely to join or get equal treatment. things are bad today with whatsapp and facebook monopoly in the messaging and social markets. just imagine similar monopolies in other segments. bigger players would be able to get exclusive access to a large segment of the market by joining the program while smaller players would struggle to emerge without the same advantage and blah blah.

free basics has reportedly removed a few issues that analysts/experts/etc. had originally reported. i have not given much thought about it. facebook has massive trust issues and as a owner of a struggling web platform which also gets affected by this program... i cannot support it :D

please tell a new isp that has emerged in the last six months with cheaper plans than established players in rural segment of the indian market. hell even name one that provide services in the urban segment.

There are so many isp. They just don't have service on national level. That's why we are unaware about them. They operate locally. In gurgaon, is not there nextra and you broadband provide service with FTTH? Or siti cable too and also railwire. All are FTTH provider and have cheaper plans.

all of these tiny operators are only focused on profitable areas like new emerging societies where they can signup an exclusive deal to provide internet services. no one is laying down fiber in existing areas with multiple operators. forget villages.

1. It does not exist right now.
2. No one knows the actual plans it would launch.
3. No one knows how much of the rural area would Jio cover. Would it be restricted to villages around bigger cities or actual rural areas where you might only find BSNL as the sole mobile service provider.

I am not sure why I even need to highlight the poor state of internet access in India. It's so obvious. Facebook is laying down a trap and TRAI is going to fall into it. Selective internet access is way too much power in the hands of a private company based in USA.

I don't know whats wrong with it. If users are getting service for free then why not promote it. Those who can pay can surf whole internet and those can't afford can surf restricted internet. This is not going to change Internet user and infrastructure growth in India. Yes i know fb might doing it because they want more people to use FB so they can get more money from ads. If ISP are not going to throttle and restrict internet of paid user then its does not seems a problem to me.
