Sterlite Technologies wins Rs.372 crore BSNL contract

Sterlite Technologies Limited (“Sterlite”) [BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange): 532374, NSE (National Stock Exchange of India, Mumbai): STRTECH], a leading global provider of transmission solutions today announced that it has won a contract from BSNL, valued at Rs 372 Crores (US$ 77 Million), for enabling a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Network based on Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology. Sterlite was awarded a major share of the total outlay of project, amongst competition from global players. Sterlite has streamlined its efforts to ensure that the contract is executed within FY10.

BSNL plans to implement similar FTTH networks at 25 cities across India by Year 2012, which would impact 2 million subscribers. This would provide subscribers access to never-experienced bandwidth and speeds (in excess of 100 Mb/s) as well as multitude of applications ranging from utility applications such as High-Definition Video Conferencing or entertainment applications as High-Speed Gaming.

The current phase of the FTTH network would be capable of providing high-speed internet, IPTV solutions, VoIP, and other Value Added Services to about 500,000 subscribers. BSNL, one of the largest telecom service providers globally, will be the first telco in the country to deploy commercial scale Fiber-to-the-Home network.

FTTH, but usage will still be capped at 2.5 GB and 5 GB. You could consume entire month's quota in an hour. :clap:IPTV though would be promising and much needed competetion for local cable and also DTH companies. Just hope they do not overlay stupid BSNL logo on screen like the DTH companies like to do.

I agree ichaitanya's point .. Unlimited download at 2MBPS will be cool. But with unlimited download + Rs 500 to Rs 1000+ 2MBPS plus speed will be awesome in near future..anybody else with comments? :wewin:

I think BSNL are nuts if they invest crores in super high speed technology then end up giving only 1-2 mbps UL connections (assuming they even do that much)... it will be a waste of cash since the existing DSL infrastructure can do it... but one can always hope...

On the contrary, I think Airtel must have ignored all this, and must have planned out their launch by now. BSNL just doesn't have the leadership to get things running, which is reflected time and again, most recently with the 3G thing. It is a disaster for them. Back to topic, FTTH is going to be exciting as and when it does come to India. The best part is - and I hope they keep it that way - the lack of caps. Since with Fiber, bandwidth wouldn't be much of an issue. Korea has some awesome plans, and while they are not to be kept pace with it in these areas, US too has got some real cool speeds since the introduction of FiOS and more recently Optimum Ultra.

"bandwidth not an issue" ? i think the greedy private operators are hoarding/choking international bandwidth intentionally so prices remain artificially high and speeds low...
