OMG! I never knew that iPhone 5 doesn't have Maps in them. Thats awkward, why has Apple done this? Ridiculous.

lol. welcome to the party! Apple launched their own mapping app with ios 6 and iPhone 5. so if you update any ios device to ios 6, google maps disappear.

Thanks, i was to about my iPhone. Is their own mapping app(app name) free(incase if i update)?
I have never updated the iOS right from the beginning, so i'll try to update to iOS 5. Problem is mines not jail-broken.

i doubt you can update to ios5 now that ios6 is out. through the official route i mean.and Apple maps is free. yes. but it is also supposed to be horrible. at least for india, it is unlikely to be as comprehensive as Nokia here or google maps or even waze.

If you update to iOS 5 you can still use Google Maps. The latter will vanish once you update to iOS 6. Apple Maps are free but not good - and horrible in India. Jailbreak has nothing to do with the ability to upgrade your firmware. However, if your phone was originally locked to a carrier and unlocked using a third party software or gevy-sim, it may become locked again if you upgrade. If your phone was factory unlocked, you can safely upgrade your firmware.PS: Oops. Looks like you have an iPhone 5. In that case you can not downgrade to iOS 5 as you do not have SHSH blobs saved.

well, then i have to jailbreak it... which i dont like to do.

would itunes update his phone to ios5 first before updating it to ios6? i assume it would update it to the latest version from Apple? the workaround is probably downloading the ipsw file and installing it manually?

Right. iTunes will upgrade to iOS 6 straight away. I don't think he can upgrade to iOS 5 manually as well (by using an ipsw) unless he has saved SHSH blobs as Apple has stopped signing the firmware now. I could be wrong though. I have only downgraded firmware and never upgraded to a non-latest one.This presuming that he is on an iPhone 4 or lower. No way to get iOS 5 on an iPhone 5.

If your 3GS is factory unlocked, try downloading iOS 5.1.1 from a third party website and check if iTunes allows you to manually upgrade to it. I doubt it will as (like I said before) Apple has stopped signing the firmware now and you will need SHSH blobs from Cydia. Considering you were never on iOS 5, you won't have any saved blobs. You can upgrade to iOS 6.0.1Just ensure your phone IS factory unlocked. You will rendered without network service otherwise and may have to rely on third party unlocking software, or purchase a factory unlock online.
