Gmail Yahoo Mail makes Phone number mandatory?

Gmail, Yahoo make phone number mandatory for new email ids - The Economic Times

Any person wishing to create a new email id needs to provide a telephone number which Gmail and Yahoo use for verification.

While for Gmail a person can give either telephone or mobile number, for a new Yahoo it is now mandatory to have a mobile number.

I have n number of gmail ids, that even I dont remember it

Yes its compulsory for new accounts.

For my existing account, Yahoo reminds me now and then to enter mobile number but also gives option to skip it.
