Google has not launched a phone for now. But Google has announced something called Open Handset Alliance, a project through which Google wants to spearhead the mass adoption of open mobile Internet. Google is seen as a beneficiary of open mobile networks as opposed to closed mobile systems closely held by mobile operators worldwide.Google is expected to turn mobile operators, who are one of most profitable companies around the world to pure commodity players through this platform. Some people expect collapse of share prices of all major mobile operators in the coming few years as Google puts more and more pressure on mobile operators through its innovative platform offerings.

HTC has already confirmed that they are working on phones on this platform. They are going to be launched by the mid of next year.

This open handset alliance organization pretty much rules out the possibility of a Gphone. A Gphone would mean that google are directly competing with other mobile manufacturers and this completely goes against the open handset alliance. What Google are doing is targeting a far bigger market than they would do with a Gphone and i am pleased with that. If the Android OS is a success and i believe it will be , then this will set up the next stage of battle where Google will target Microsoft's Windows operating system.
