Google Play Music (RIP)

With iTunes Match, all your music — even songs you’ve imported from CDs — can be stored in iCloud. So you can access your music from all your devices and listen to your entire library, wherever you are.

Apple iTunes Match

Here is the Google's post about the same feature on Google Play Store.

On November 13, we're bringing music on Google Play to Europe. Those of you in the U.K, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will be able to purchase music from the Google Play store and add up to 20,000 songs—for free—from your existing collection to the cloud for streaming to your Android devices or web browser. We’re also launching our new matching feature to streamline the process of uploading your personal music to Google Play. We’ll scan your music collection and any song we match against the Google Play catalog will be automatically added to your online library without needing to upload it, saving you time. This will be available in Europe at launch on November 13 and is coming to the U.S. soon after. This will all be for free—free storage of your music, free matching, free syncing across your devices and free listening.

I am not sure how this works but according to them you get access to all their songs (200,000+) for 99 bucks a month?

I am presuming the songs have some sort of DRM.

And its not DRM free. If u downloaded a file on ur PC, it can be used only on the PC. U need to download it again for ur Media players/cellphone......how illogical it is. Especially coz they say "U can download any song unlimited number of times" If thats the case, why not put a dropdown sort of thing on the site that allows user to select how many copies he wants to make......? That is, if the mechanism of DRM allows that.

I have been noticing that popular songs are uploaded in an instant! They should take a couple of minutes at least considering my upload speed is hardly 500kbps. I just tried with a new song (Sweet Home Alabama) I purchased from Flipkart Flyte and voila it was uploaded in an instant! I can only assume that Google’s Song Match technology worked here. Probably because my account was enabled on an American IP. Can anyone confirm? The funny thing is that the same song does not have the share option enabled in Google Music. I find it hard to believe that Google Play does not have this song in its catalog!

Sam tried it on his account and he confirmed the same experience. This is pretty cool!
