Hard Disk probably on the verge of crashing

When getting a new HDD, any setup to do before starting to use it? Like a low level format and some scan and marking for bad sectors? I have never done this, but have got a new 3TB HDD for my NAS as well as 2 new 3TB HDDs for workstations at office to backup Virtual Machines.

My WDC 320GB 5400rpm drive crash this month too! Got Hitachi and so far its going strong. Btw no one seems to be interested in Hitachi drives here ? Whats the deal! I got 2 year warranty!

coz hitachi's HDD business is now owned by WD if my memory serves me right.

Few basic things i would suggest to minimise the crashing risk.
1) Use Ups
2) Avoid 5400 rpm & Always prefer 7200 rpm drives (or higher if you can afford) ( Hope 95% internal hdds for desktop in the mkt are 7200 rpms)
3) The sata cable
Use a sata cable which has a clip, so it won't get loosen upon regular use

In the software side, there is nothing to be done. Even defrag is useless. One thing is, Just be patient when the os loadsboots even worth waiting for extra 30s after the os completely loaded. It will give time for the hdd & ram to set its page file sync ...
These tips would reduce the crash to a great extent ...

My 2TB Seagate internal drive failed sometime back and I gave it for replacement. They gave me a "Certified Repaired Disk" .
After 10 days that tooo failed(OS hags if I play video from that) and seatools says un-repairable.They are ready to take it back as say no-warranty for the replacement disk.
I bough external WD drive for storing movies and backup of personal items, Let's see how that goes.

Good tips. I would also include to use a good quality SMPS. The cheaper SMPSes are main cause for HDD crash and data sector corruption

My brother got his HDD replaced about 6 times due to OS not loading issues. I dont think you should have an issue of allowed only once. your original purchase warranty will hold good for the duration.

Yea, i know buddie.Even if it wasn't owned by WDC , i had still bought hitachi. For me hitachi drives runs great despite several stories about crashing of hitachi drives.
