Has any one of you been successful in using any other GPON ONT, other than the ones provided by Airtel (Nokia, ZTE, etc.)?

I wish to use the xx230v or xc220v, by TP-Link as my primary router-cum-ONT and use my other TP Link Router in AP mode (as I always have done). I believe this would allow me better range, better control through the Tether App, may be mesh support, Wi-Fi 6 (in case of xx230v). What’s better, I wouldn’t have to deal with ZTE’s crappy range & UI.

Yes i have an ont with Realtek chip which allows for changing everything (model, serial no etc) and it is indeed working but not completely. Speeds are limited to 20Mbps for some reason likely because some omci issue.

It was a lot of messing around with numerous settings to get it working. Looks like my OLT is very picky.

So, it can be said that it’s possible but not through Airtel directly!? What plan are you on otherwise? Have you tried any other ONT to check if it makes a difference to your speed?

None of the other onts seem to work (I've tried Huawei Hg8145v5 and oem one from DBC). It only works when you clone a ton of parameters from the ONU.

I think the speed issue can be fixed with more tweaking. It is a common issue with Alcatel OLTs which Airtel uses in my area.

I am using a Huawei HG8120C ONT on Airtel, works at full speed. The Airtel provided one is the ZTE ONT, but it doesn't work in bridge mode when using static IP address, but PPPoE works when bridged. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway I was able to get my HG8120C working, simply by cloning the serial of the ZTE ONT, no other changes were necessary.

@MrGordon I was hoping for a reply from you, thanks a lot for that.

So, just to confirm, with this Huawei ONT, are you able to use your own router? And all this, by cloning the SN (and probably also the MAC)?
I would do anything to do away with the ZTE ONT Router (ZTE670L). I have an ONT lying around from my last ISP, I’ll see if it works.
