it should be welcomed
So what next? Every country start having their own payment standard? You take your Rupay Card VISA/MasterCard to China and notice that they do not accept it no more? In addition to local SIM Cards, you would need a local payment card to get around without cash? Do we really need that?

There is a reason why VISA and MasterCard work. They are accepted everywhere. No retail outlet is going to support 180 different payment standards on their machines. India needs to get their shit right.

I have mixed views here - Pushing for a local product can be useful as it would help reduce costs - They could probably still issue Visa/MC cards on demand if anyone wants so. India needs to ban Amex if we are stick to only MC/Visa.

In any case we are welcoming newer forms of payments such as wallets etc. As long its not the only option left - I see no problem with Rupay card.

wallet is not exactly a new form of payment. you need to recharge it using an existing form of payment. mobikwik picking up cash from your home to charge their wallet is sort of independent :D

imo... rupay should either be opt-in or complementary to visa or mastercard cards. it should not be offered as the default option. i am sure technology exists to create hybrid cards that support both rupay and other standards... i have seen cards that offer both amex and one of mastercard/visa.

Well, I mean for the merchant it is .. You mentioned about retail outlets hesitating to accept various standards ...

Also they are not going to know a thing.. Their Payment gateways are going to replace their machine .. which they would any way be doing as even the global standards change due to changes in security process etc

I wont be surprised if PSU or even others banks end up having RuPay card as the default one & others will be available on a premium fee.

right. i can see how sbi and other sarkari banks would push this on their customers. hdfc doing it make very little sense.

I have a question here. Does bank CC take requests for a new debit card over phone?

How do they verify account ownership? I'd be calling from my registered number, but beyond that do they ask for any details?
Hdfc gives you a telephone pin no .

Just called HDFC today because I received no confirmation SMS in 24 hours. They said RuPay card cannot be upgraded under any circumstances even if I wanted to upgrade to platinum. 100 % proof that government is pushing their shitty local RuPay cards

You are likely to purchase internationally? Also what kind of account have you opened?
