ahem. the phones in US are subsidized. you pay 50-60 USD a month on contract.

in india that comes to around 2500-3000 bucks minimum mobile bill.

how many of us pay that much for mobile here in india?

and for a period of 2 years before the contract gets over?

Wow :O 29000 INR is quite high price for a Locked phone. In USA you can get it for $299 Locked to AT&T & 2 year contract, so the prices for Unlocked one are higher.

first of all, @ 29000 in india, we get 8 GB iPhone 3G
in US we get 8 GB iphone 3G @ $ 299 $ 199

u cannot compare both of them because the 2 year contract of AT&T has a minimum rent of $ 70 which we dont have in india. so the comparison is stupid.

That's cuz some Indians have too much money. That's why the rest of us have to suffer.

secondly, locked phones in india are expensive because of our imcompetent judiciary. in US, if u take a phone with contract & dont pay the money then u will be sued & the penalty will be instant.

indian companies know that will not happen.

a popular example of that: about 5 years back reliance had launched an offer of 'monsoon hungama' which gave a black & white cdma phone @ rs. 500 but the deception was that the subscriber had to pay rs. 200 / month for the next 36 months. people didnt know about this first & when they realized, they simply dumped reliance after using it for some time without paying any bill. some of the cases lasted few years.

indian cos dont want to take any risk. so they are selling an unsubsidized iphone 3G.

yeap. the legal system ensures that the locked phones are not sold subsidized here in the market. in fact one of the airtel guys said this specifically before the launch of the iPhone. indian customers do not stick to contracts so it makes no sense for them to offer them such contracts. so getting the full price of the phone initially is the safe way to go around here. this is the reason we end up paying shit load of money for substandard hardware equipment... when it comes to DTH or IPTV or USB/3G/Wimax/xyz wireless connectivity modems.

looks like AT&T is preparing to get rid of their stock of iPhone 3G as well... new iphone is expected to be launched in june/july period. o2 is also expected to lower the price point of iphone 3g in the UK market in may.

Even if AT&T sells the iPhone without a contract it will mostly be locked, of course you ca unlock the phone using yellsnow but an iphone is not worth 30000rs.Instead buy an ipod touch for 12000Rs and buy Nokia 5800 for 18000.

As of today You can get an iPhone 3G 16 GB Brand new from Vodafone for 30,500 (approx). Same from Grey Market in 20-22K. Plus the grey market one will be jailbroken and unlocked and have many apps. iPhone 3Gs 32 GB for 32000 from Grey Market. Not sure how much is it in Vodafone/ Airtel stores. You can check up their prices on the website.
